With a heavy shift to analytics, the market is placing a premium on puck possession, shot suppression, and zone time. The result is that other attributes like hitting and toughness are not valued as highly. So the Flames went out and bought some low value skills against the grain of the market. Sure it's more proven that advanced stats will result in expected long term success. It does not mean that some of these other attributes no longer have a place in the game.
Markets adjust to trends, and right now it's hard to find value in possession positive players.

It also helps when you have a mastermind analytical coach like Sutter that can turn even the biggest possession black holes into dominant forces

I think it's basically a given at this point that Monahan will be traded or bought out in the off-season. I hope they do the same with Backlund and bring in a stronger second libe centre (if Gaudreau and Tkachuk can be re-signed).
Maybe throw everything at acquiring Scheifele:
Backlund + Pelletier + Valimaki + Dube + 1st
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Scheifele-Toffoli
Pretty solid top 6 for a 2-3 year window at a cup. Go with Ruzicka as the 3rd line centre with a veteran option for 4th line who can move up and down the line-up if needed.

This just won't happen, frankly. I could see them throwing a lot at Scheifle, as long as his attitude won't be a problem. A palatable package would be Dube + Valimaki + 2nd + B prospect/3/4th pick + Monahan (cap).
Monny's M-NMC would still have to work out too.

Winnipeg isn't just going to give him away for a bunch of stuff. Dube and Valimaki are more likely to be bottom of the lineup quality and the rest is worse. Not a video game, adding draft picks until they accept doesn't work

You certainly won't get Scheifle without a few premium assets going back. That package would be a quick hang up. Start with Pelletier and a 1st.

Monahan is not near addition by subtraction territory. But his contract space could be better spent on JG or MT.

He's a pp specialist who isn't effective in the top 6 and lacks the skillset for the bottom 6... and he makes $6.35m. Realistically he's 4m overpaid for what he brings imo

Monahan has actually been playing good hockey since Toffoli arrived. I don't think that he is moved until the offseason, if he is moved. I think that one of he or Backlund has got to go to make the re-signings work, and Dube moves back to his natural position as the third line centre.
I like the suggestion of Namesnikov to play all over the lineup as needed. I've always liked his game.

Wait why are we trading schiefele on a sweetheart deal for this? That does nothing for the Jets. Are you trading Tkachuk for Copp+Stanley+Vesa+2nd to us?

Please point me in the direction of $2.35 million “power play specialists”.

I could've said $5m overpaid and it's just as likely someone like you would whine about that too lol. How about this? IMO if he had been injured all season, his absence would not have been missed even a little bit

Someone like me to whine? Nice. Basically I thought your post was rubbish, it appears as though the Flames agree. Sure, he’s underperforming his contract. No argument there.
63.7% on power play face offs. (7th in the league for >100 pp face offs taken).

How do you know what the Flames think? Ask yourself what he would get this summer if he was a Ufa based on his performance the last couple of seasons. He's closer to PTO league minimum than 6.35m in terms of value

Letter, ice time, clearly a long line to recover from injury, etc…
Sorry but it’s hard for me to take people seriously when they post things like “PTO for league minimum”. Just sounds like angry fandom.

The buyout is a legitimate option. its 4m in cap savings when their top three offensive producers are getting a raise.
Not to mention that Brower's dead cap is finally off the books next season.(someone else who wore an A the year before his buyout).
That said, the team is better with Monahan on it, the only real issue is his contract. On the open market he could easily sign for 4M. Which is closer to where his contract should be.

Monahan has not played in the top six at even strength for the entirety of the season. People wanting him to produce top six results in a bottom six capacity need to re-evaluate their expectations. Ideally of course you don't want to pay your 3C in the 6M dollar range, but that's how he's being utilized.

Spending 16.575M on the top 3C's isn't a problem, and arguably their collective production is still fair value. Obviously they can try to improve the bang for the buck in the off-season, but it's the hardest position to improve.
An ideally designed team is probably something like 10M/6.5M/4.5M =$21M down the middle (though ideally one of those guys is young enough that their AAV is lower).

Listening to Gudbranson’s interview that was a big takeaway. He basically said it takes a lot longer then fans and even players think.
