what about Gretzky's opinion?
Wayne Gretzky believes the IIHF should not allow Russia to compete at the upcoming rescheduled 2022 World Juniors set for August.
Then you're not punishing an individual,
Would suck to be those kids, though.
I thought I read something in the Ukraine thread that the IIHF was considering this.

Russia should be banned from the IIHF, they can play games against Putin's dream team and let him score 10 goals

Probably wouldn’t set a great precedent for the league if contracts were suspended when sovereign nation governments made decisions.
Seems a little chaotic. Probably illegal?

"Decisions?"
How about we agree to suspend contracts every time a sovereign nation's government invades another sovereign nation, for no reason other than the self-gratification of the seemingly psychopathic dictator...?

I always get confused at the double standard that seems to exist.
Where was all the outrage when US and its allies decided to illegally invade Iraq? Thousands and thousands of civilians have died in that conflict that has raged for decades.
All of a sudden, the same western world is outraged that Russia has invaded Ukraine? Why is it different now? I have heard the rhetoric that a "civilized" country has been attacked. Just because it's mostly white people getting attacked and dying, it's an outrage?
War - everywhere, for any reason - should be condemned. It shouldn't matter who is attacking or who is being attacked.
Also the holier than thou attitude that the US and western allies take is laughable. They have waged war and killed thousands of innocent civilians over the past 50 years. They have no standing to say anything. Everyone is about blasting their own propoganda and has their own agenda. It's a disgrace.
The only definite result of war and these political maneuverings is that innocent civilians (once again) will bear the brunt and the heartache and the death. It's very saddening. Your thoughts should be with the people of Ukraine purely because of what is happening but it should also be with any civilian population anywhere getting bombed by drones or missiles around the world.
On that note, Hasek is completely wrong here. Russians have no say in this war. They did not vote to go to war. It was a decision made by Putin and his men. Say what you want about Putin, I think all major world powers have done their fair share of committing atrocities around the globe. The reaction in the west is one that being anti-war only matters when it's against them or their allies.

It sounds like that's what's going to happen.

What I wonder is, if it does happen does that mean that the KHL can now sign any player including those under NHL contract (and vice versa)?

It's funny, as I typed my response, I expected an Iraq reference to be the first response thereto.
It is a different time now than the first Iraq invasion, which was an invasion as well.
One way to possibly cause Putin to change his methods is to effect those close to him, such as the elite.
I am not actually taking the position we should necessarily revoke the visas at this time, but was more responding to the "decisions" comment, and suggesting this invasion by Putin is simply a "decision" akin to any other decision made by a government.

No one's contract is getting terminated. This isn't even being discussed at the NHL offices. Hasek is angry and made dumb comments.
Do any of you have Russians in your workplace? Do you think it would be appropriate (or legal) for your boss to walk up to one of them right now and say, "Hey Dmitri, yeah sorry, but I gotta let you go. Russian and all".
Get a grip.

The Iraq war, while improper IMO, had a lot of different detail to it. And in any event, was almost 20 years ago (and did prompt a lot of outrage anyway). If the suggestion is that there should be no steps against Russia now because the US did something 20 years ago (and not Canada in any direct way), that’s a dumb argument. Maybe people have learned better.

Not at the time, you were either "with us or against us"
It is interesting to see our opinions change when "we" are being invaded vs doing the invading.
The masses will always buy what they are being sold. (more of a contempt for Iraq than Ukraine situation)

Canadians have no right to say anything about Ukraine because of the unjust war of Iraq! You know, the war that saw Canadians marching in every major city saying it was unjust before the Canadian leader declared that Canada would not declare war against Iraq.

Protests in London about the war in Iraq, let's try and do a little research before posting next time.

That’s a bunch of BS. Protests against the Iraq war were among the biggest ever seen. How old are you anyway?

i get the idea of doling out some punishment to a coi8ntry like russia/belerus; however, i hate the idea of mixing sports and politics.
even tougher when it is teenagers, like at the WJHC.
so what happens if russia pulls back, do you just say "game on" or do they have to sit in the penalty box for a while?

Sanctions are a broad brush which unfortunately almost always affect innocent bystanders. But really, there’s no way to not affect bystanders in these situations.
