Yeah, there has been fighting in that region on and off over that whole period, with an estimated 14K people killed (including 3-4K civilians) and 1-2 million people displaced. So not the scale of fighting that's happening now by any means, but there has been pretty consistent conflict in that area over the last 8 years. And living conditions have been pretty bad for residents at times (no water or electricity for periods of time).
But that doesn't mean Russia's one-sided characterization of it is at all correct. Basically it started with the 2014 Ukrainian revolution where separatist groups in the region began to protest the new government which eventually turned into an armed conflict. Since then, Russian-backed insurgents have been fighting the Ukrainian army and various Ukrainian militias on and off (I think there have been something like 30 different ceasefires, none of which have held).

I'd like to think that if they just ceded everything south of the Dnieper from Zaporizhzhia east that would do it, because I'd think that would probably do it from Putin's side of things, but I really doubt Zelenskyy is even open to considering that.

Eff that. Should be zero gains from this sort of action. All borders should be returned to pre-2014. (ie return Crimea. Get hanged.)
The only people that can stop this without total NATO v Russia war is the Russian people, military and "business" leaders overthrowing Putin before he does something worse.

Those are complete non-starters.

The Russian ambassador to the UN paired denazification with de-genocide. Very dangerous words to put together.

Are you on a computer or mobile? I find on Tapatalk (mobile app) that twitter links never work.
But they work fine on computer (or simply web based mobile).

All the more reason to join NATO.

Not to degrade the conflict, but is Zelenskyy the sexiest man alive? I bet he's better at hockey than Putin too.

He's 5'7
Putin is also 5'7
Difference is Zelensky is fighting with the might of a 7 foot giant while Putin has tiny man syndrome.
