Basically, if you own stock in a Russian company you're stuck with it.

Market openings around the world are going to be interesting tomorrow morning.

If Putin had actually retired the first time he "stepped down" as president, he would have been able to enjoy a lavish retirement while being remembered as one of the best leaders in modern Russian history, bringing stability and prosperity back to Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. Instead he clung to his lust for power and now will be remembered as one of the great villains of the 21st century, and he'll likely leave Russia worse off than when he first took over. Why can't these despotic leaders ever see the forest for the trees?

This is definitely going to fascinating...

Not sure exactly what the Russian Banks can do? As an example, when Enron cratered and a mass sell happened, if no one bought Enron stock, say it was essentially frozen from trading, it would not have protected its value right?

Maybe someone in finance can offer some perspective/expertise?

The value drops as the sellers try to sell, pretty much like selling a car on Kijji, you can ask for 10,000 but it you only get offers for 200 that's what your car is worth whether you sell it or not, domestic buyers arent going to be paying top dollar either, in fact if you were a cash rich Russian tomorrow would be a great time to get into oil and gas stocks at 90% off

Based on the sighting of where Russian troops are appearing and where they are headed, then despite the bravery and tactical successes of Ukrainian military forces the Russian military is encircling the bulk of the Ukrainian Army in the East and effectively ending the war.

Unlikely he would have been able to just sail off into the sunset. Instability of his successor is one of the reasons he stuck around. He just as easily could have been stripped of his wealth and thrown in a gulag.

That Russian convoy better turn back into Russia if they want to live.
This sounds great and all but how is all this weaponry and aid being delivered into Ukraine safely and effectively?

Pretty much the whole western border is open and EU/NATO controlled

That is a worry I think. How much of the weapons will get there just in time to be captured by Russia?

I don't even know how to predict this will go. The conventional war might end soon, but the insurgency and resistance may go on for a long time. Will the sanctions on Russia cause enough civil unrest within their borders that they need to let Ukraine go? Will parts of the Russian Federation with separatist movements use the moment to cause a civil war? Maybe Ukraine capitulates and everything calms down?

So many different ways this can go. Some people predict that Moldova is next on Putin's list once Ukraine is defeated. If that happens, I don't see how an larger war doesn't breakout.

If they can get Ukraine pilots to Poland and use it as a staging area, they can run into Belarus and apply pressure from the north, relieving pressure on Kiev. Belarus just announced that they are going to support Russia with boots on the ground, so that makes them a viable target.

Staging out of Poland but not having control of the planes or pilots put NATO into a grey area. I'm not sure how that would work. I guess another option is Kosovo, who have already had soldiers (not officially) join on the side of Ukraine.

Either option would be daring Russian pilots to fly into airspace controlled by NATO, if they wanted to address planes on the ground. Is that brinksmanship, or simply prudent?

I don't know. Is giving Ukrainian planes a place to land safely considered active involvement?

Apparently there is a large pathogens research and collection laboratory in Kyiv that scientists warn could be a catastrophe in waiting if the facility is damaged, as if there wasn't enough to worry about.

This is effectively the truth of any Dictator. Their lives are directly correlated to their power. There is no viable 'Dictator Retirement Plan.'

Once they're no longer useful or under the protection of the State someone is going to find their continued existence inconvenient and seek to remedy the situation.

If Poland is used as a staging area for Ukrainian pilots, Russia will almost certainly see that as a clear act of war by Poland and NATO. Things would escalate very quickly after that.

Perhaps any new foreign pilots or troops need a quick Ukrainian citizenship swearing in prior to taking off/shooting a gun.
