Default Video Capture From HDV Camcorder - Help

I bought a Sony HDV camera and am trying to capture video onto my computer. Anybody have experience with this?

My old camcorder was a Hi-8 and I never really captured anything. I now want to do more video editing and bought the hi def to stave off obsolescence, at least for a while.

I have downloaded Ulead and Adobe Premier and tried to capture but they freeze. I then tried Microsoft Movie maker and the capture worked. However, it does not support burning to DVD. The documentation says the WMM 2 does support dvd and Windows update says it is part of SP2 which I have installed I can't find it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am not a tech guy but have a decent understanding of computers. I have a pentium 4 2.6 with 2.5 gb of ram, which I understand should be enough.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is really related but....I recently had to install a legal copy of Windows XP because although it looked accept the SP2 update it actually didn't. I had no end of problems getting video capture software to load on the pirate version.

I'm actually having the same problem with a Sony Hard Drive Camcorder and a 'non-purchased' copy of XP...any help would be doubly appreciated!
