I don't think he was messing around - he just didn't have good control of the puck yet for a shot.

Players are taught to close the gap hard, it's just that Sillinger stopped and held the puck. That gives the green light to lay him out. If you watch the video, Bennett is gliding when he hits him. It's not a charge, it's a hard hit on a stationary player who's dangling the puck.
By the NHL rulebook it's a charge though.

"Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player
who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of
distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A
“charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal
frame or in open ice.

Bennett travelled a long distance, and violently checked the opponent.

Yep, there really isn't much debate. Fans and many commentators don't understand the rule and think its something different entirely. You can't hunt a guy down from 20+ feet away.

because you don't understand the rules...gliding doesn't matter

ref made the correct call in the end, 2 mins is probably good since the contact was so clean and there is no injury. Pretty risky play though, if he is slightly off on the contact its a big time suspension.

I guess we’ll never know if it was a penalty or not.

I don't think you've actually watched the replay or you're just not willing to see it for what it was.
The hit was clean, hard but clean.
Sillinger pulls up and Bennett gets all of him. If Bennett doesn't go in hard and Sillinger drives the net, he's got a clean path. The gap control by Bennett is executed perfectly and he finishes his check when the player pulls up. If you don't like that, go watch soccer. This is a clean hard hit. That's hockey.

I do and its great

if you watch the reverse angle and understand the rules, the real rules not what talking heads have been saying the rules are for years its textbook charging

The trailing ref gave him a 2 min charging penalty, if you don't like the fact he got a penalty go watch tennis?

Don't acuse me of not being willing to see whatever

NHL RULEBOOK, the sport you told me not to watch

a player who, as a result of
distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner

You are still talking about the contact which I agree is fine. By the NHL rulebook its a penalty and was called...sorry the rules are too soft for you

The view from your condescending soap box must be different.
The rule reads subjectively and is hardly black and white.

It was clearly a charge. Not anywhere close to what Scheifle did. But still dirty. A fine or 1 game suspension could be worthy.

You didn’t understand the rule .

It was quoted and explained to you. It’s okay that you were dead wrong.

Thank him for educating you.

says the guy who told me to go watch soccer if I don't like it (you should go watch soccer, Canada mens and womens teams have been amazing to watch)

the NHL (which last I checked is the worlds #1 HOCKEY league) penalized the play, check the box score

Sam Bennett 2mins CHARGING

"the ref standing right there didn't call it"

Its not his call, he is watching the puck...play on the puck was fine I am agreeing with that.

injury and being late was the difference...that was a 4 playoff game suspension which is massive.

Which I don't agree with their interpretation of the rule.

NHL RULEBOOK,

a player who,
as a result of distance traveled (How far is too far?),
shall violently check an opponent in any manner (What do you determine to be violent?)

Sounds like a lot of room for interpretation to me.

Not a stride from the top of the circle to the dot.
Shoulder to body.
Guy takes it hard because he decided to pull up for a shot and accept the hit.
He could have just as easily avoided the hit and not tried to score.

I think the best way to frame it was awesome! Nobody was badly hurt and it was one of the biggest hits of the year, love to see it.

If you throw a hit like that you can’t be surprised if the guy gets injured
Just like when two guys fight and then express remorse if one gets injured
It’s dumb
If you are trying to hurt someone you are accepting you may injure them.

I thought he hit him high, which makes it dirty.

But that is debatable, and let's ignore it because it isn't necessary here. The hit is, without question, charging. And when you factor in the ferocity, as well as the situation, there is a pretty strong case for a suspension.

(for the record, I love big, open ice hits)

Same old Bennett. He will always take bad penalties, he will always be suspended for illegal hits. That's simply his game.

The bolded describes almost every hard hit. You could argue that Scott Stevens style blue line hits less so (based on the recipient's greater speed), but he still travelled distance to violently check his opponents...
