I also wasn’t the only one expressing skepticism over a possible invasion. Anyway, reasonable people change their minds as new information becomes available.

I'll fully admit right here that I was of the same position as Peter when it came to this. I didn't think that Putin would step over the line, let alone vault over it.

Exactly.
Not that it makes any difference (unless someone really wants to play 'gotcha' with war breaking out), but I thought - hoped - all of this Russian mobilization was just posturing from Putin... So, I was wrong too

I hope your right. Captain Crunch paints a very pessimistic view. This is just a disgusting event perpetuated by an out of control autocrat. Unbelievable that that the world is in a state where we just have to stand by and watch the carnage unfold. At what point does the rest of the world say F-it, lets call this guy on his threats?

Kyiv being so close to the Belarus border is a poor strategic position to be in for a war against Russia. Ukrainian government may last longer if it can spin up conscripts fast enough and are willing to be fluid + fall back to positions other than the capital. Most Ukrainian men already have basic military training from their mandatory military service program, so that is a plus there.
Question is whether the arms Ukraine needed weeks ago actually make it to them on time like you say. Putin duped the naive west countries good into thinking diplomatic solutions were possible when they clearly are not. Now the arms and funding aid Ukraine needed badly are delayed. Those arms packages promised yesterday probably won't start getting to Ukraine for another week at best. At that point, where are safe transfer points?

Doesn't surprise me in the least.
I mean there was a large genocide in the Balkans in our lifetime.
The level of hate here is high.

Yeah, and I don't feel good about painting a pessimistic picture of things. But this whole thing is about math. Russia has the numbers, they have more advanced weapons system. They have the initiative and Ukraine isn't going to be able to gain that unless they're willing to give up territory for speed and to stretch out the Russians.
I don't doubt the resolve of the Ukrainians fighting and dying today. But even a few days of combat operations like this and knowing that besides some material help that might not arrive until its too late, there's really no solid help or relief coming is going to really hurt moral.

The technological advances have negated the 3-1 ratio for attacking to defending troops, but as I said before I still hope a lot of body bags go home to The Motherland.
Urban fighting, if the defenders are totally committed, is one of the last areas where a small force can really bog down an attacker.

A question to the military tacticians here. If the key to the Russians taking Kiev is capturing 1 of the 2 airports, wouldnt it make sense for Ukraine to scuttle one of the airports and then consolidate their defense around the remaining airport? Obviously that will hamper the future rebuilds/resupply but seems like a good trade given how dire the situation is.

But war is different now, numbers and a technological advance are a serious obstacle to overcome.
As I said the 3-1 ratio isn't what it once was.

If it's like the second time they rolled into Grozny, there won't be much Kyiv left.

So at what point does Canada, America and European Allies attack back?
They aren't just going to give all of Ukraine to Putin.

Just saw this pop up on Navy Lookout - down the tweet thread, they show it's been confirmed. Think I read yesterday that they'd hit a Turkish ship as well?
