I was with someone today who’s very close to the organization, but not as close to this negotiation as Conroy, who said he thinks we’re going to lose Gaudreau. I then sent him a text with a screenshot of Conroy’s comment. Waiting to hear back…. Lol.

I'd lean to the latter.

Would make me hesitate in making him the GM. Love the guy, and he's great for sports radio, but if the team said no comment you wonder about his filter.
You definitely never want to be a tool.

I love Conny but I hope he wasn't just being overly optimistic here and coming out this early doesn't backfire. July 1st will be a long wait.

For the record, I think Conroy was half joking and being optimistic.

FYI - response was “other team’s cap hits might give us a chance”

Interesting response from your friend.

Of course you are not going to disclose, but when you deliberately elect to post a vague statement made by someone who supposedly has reliable inside knowledge, people are going to wonder.

I remember when Gaudreau for Konecny 1-for-1 was seriously being considered. My, how their outlooks have changed.

Given how dominant Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk have been this year at both ends of the ice, I would do everything possible to keep all three of them. Model the team's build similar to Boston's perfection line. Trade draft picks, gut the defense; keep that line together and the team will continue to thrive.

Good lord....no.

Why do you think this club is thriving so much?

Yes they have to keep MT AND JG, but not at the expense of blowing up the back end....particularly where the only overpaid guys are on the 3rd pairing.

yeah you don't gut the defense. I think the top 4 is set for years ... they will simply have to find cheaper guys than Zadorov/Gudbranson to complement that.

I don't want to gut the defense, or any part of the team for that matter.

But you can't be afraid to move guys especially with the cap challenges ahead. I like the top 4 but I'm not ready to say keep them all for years. The best organizations do a great job of managing change, not avoiding it IMO.

Yeah but the best orgs keep the best players and make the changes below them. TB isn’t moving Point, Stamkos, Kucherov, Vasileskiy and Hedman. They move or (for the most part) just release Coleman, Gourde, Savard, Johnson, Goodrow. All nice players but they went.

Boston is similar though their cap challenges were not as severe because their signings were largely before the explosion.

You proved my point by naming 5 stars for Tampa. Not an entire top 4 on Defense.

And while TB is a model NHL franchise they are far from the only one. If I'm running the Flames, I'm not committed to my core the way TB should be committed to theirs.

Oh, I thought you meant top 4 players. The top line plus Mangiapane.

Well, the top 4 D here is extremely cheap and didn’t include a rental like Savard. That’s a huge difference. TBL kept Hedman, Sergachev, McDonough and Rutta and had Foote and Cernak to lean on. And the Bruins D this year is pretty cheap like Calgary (McAvoy’s raise kicks in big time next year).
