I really don't see the problem with giving a guy a second chance. Yes he's had his problems, but people certainly can move forward from past troubles, and it's really just up to him to make the most of this. I wish him luck.

Times are changing and there's been a public reckoning within the sport over the last few years of hockey administrators behaving badly.
Murray would likely be on a very short leash here.

Not a fan as IMO it's no different than hiring Babcock. Maybe even worse given there's more examples of abuse by him. Alcohol may have played a role but I don't buy that as a sole excuse for being a tyrant. You just listen to some of the quotes from employees and it's horrifying quite frankly.
Quote:
“Working for Bob Murray was pure daily mental warfare,” a source told the Daily Faceoff. “The abuse was endless. Crazy text messages to players and staff berating them for their performance and threats of job security."
|
To me this is preservation of the NHL old boys club as the league should be moving on from men like this.

Don't agree with you all that often Estrada, but I'm with you here. This is the sort of nhl old boys cronyism that we would laugh at the oilers for. Bob, imo, has also never proven himself a good scouting talent at the NHL level. This is all about getting friends jobs, and this is the type of guy who should be out to pasture.

I've always thought Anaheim has been among the best at drafting and developing while under Murray.
What makes you say this?

I'm all for second chances, but as a Flames fan, I don't like this move.
You look around the league right now and you're seeing many women now be given opportunities in these types of roles, even management roles. I'm not sure why the Flames would give another opportunity to somebody who abused his staff when there is an underutilized resource that may also simply do a better job.

I would share the same doubts others have about this move if it was for a managerial role.
But its a scouting role, so who cares. Im going to assume the organization did their due diligence before hiring given how progressive theyve been in other aspects. Ignoring all other things, anaheim has a good track record of finding and developing talented players under Murray. Im all for having more hockey brains help the organization.

I apologize if I’ve missed it elsewhere in this thread…who says he’ll be tasked with primarily “bird dogging” (scouting talent) vs scouting Cali based Teams as it relates to current systems, strengths weakness etc. According to past reports it would seem this guy could be at times a ruthless tyrant! If in fact alcohol abuse was the most significant factor contributing to his unacceptable behaviour and he’s turned things around IMO I don’t have any issues with the hire. Some on here seem to lose sight of the fact that alcoholism is a disease with far reaching consequences.

It's a great hire if we are solely discussing qualifications. The Ducks over the years have unearthed some great defensemen and goaltenders. It's been just over 3 months since he stepped down so it's not even like they let the dust settle. I suppose eventually another team would have hired him for some sort of role but I just rather it was another team. Not the end of the world but the optics just aren't great.

Next time you make a mistake or do something wrong. Quit your job and never get another job again. We'll all just assume that you're terrible for the rest of your lives and are doing nothing to fix your problems.
I suppose there is a way back into the world. You can email each and every person in the world to outline what you have done and ask for unanimous approval.
I hate this world.

It will be both im guessing.
It will include watching both the NHL and AHL clubs along the West Coast, and assessing personnel as well as tendencies of teams.

Nah, this is a terrible take. That's not what I said. There are plenty of jobs that don't involve making 100s of thousands to millions annually to watch hockey and jock around with the old boys club. Acting the way Bob did should close some doors for him. Actions need to have consequences. I didn't say he needed to be destitute and broke because of this. He could bring his detailed experience in hockey organization to a different sport, to a different organization. Maybe he takes some time and builds up a community program.
I am saying that acting this way should lose you your pass to fame and glory.

Well, it hasn’t been explicitly stated but “scout” has a pretty specific meaning in hockey hierarchy.

Really?
Outside of Troy Terry, his drafting from 2013-2018 was pretty bad. Remains to be seen how good the recent drafts have been, though I admit they look fine. He just took a winning Anaheim squad at the turn of the decade and drove them into the ground over the course of it from what I saw.

Isn’t he being hired as a pro scout?

Sure, but the comment I replied to implied he was good at drafting and developing talent.
What great pro acquisitions did Bob Murray make? Silfverberg? Everyone who followed swedish hockey knew he had untapped skill.

Here's the trade history for his team. Looks... bad. Best trade was probably for Kesler, though rumor at the time was that he essentially selected his destination.

Free agency wise, his best signing might have been Kunitz. Good find.
Edit: NVM, he traded Kunitz away to pittsburgh. hm.

Matching the Oilers should never be the goal.
