Losing control like that in front of the world’s cameras, just imagine what he’s capable of behind closed doors. Or not, because that just makes me want to throw up.
Alcarez/FAA/Sinner can’t arrive soon enough to replace this turd generation.

It's been pretty disturbing how much abuse (both verbal and physical) that umpires and linespeople have had to endure as of late. I think the supplementary discipline handed down by the NHL is a joke in most cases, but the ATP and WTA aren't any better. Shapo was fined for calling the umpire "corrupt" at the Aussie Open, but that's a dangerous word as it brings a person's integrity into play. I think much stiffer fines and suspensions are needed as things are certainly trending in the wrong direction.

oh look at that, the ATP claimed copyright on the Abuserev clip and now most of twitter videos have been taken down. luckily the "official" Amazon one is still up for posterity and it's higher res

Matthew Willis nails it in the piece (and I think I'm going to hit him up with a subscription)
I’ll say it again: umpire abuse, verbal and physical, should be zero tolerance offences in tennis. Zverev should inarguably be suspended for what he did in Acapulco, and new, more explicit umpire abuse rules should be codified immediately. This sport stands a good chance at attracting a new and impressionable audience on the back of the upcoming Netflix series. Tennis now gets to consciously choose how it puts itself forward. For the sake of modernity, a loosening of rules around self-directed outbursts like harmless swearing or racquet smashes, so that the good and the bad of personalities may shine more brightly on court, while a tightening of rules around how these players treat other human beings, would go a long way to ensure this sport starts living up to its own ambitions.

Djoker just won in straight sets over Silent K. The Russian played well in set 2 to force a tie-break, however Novak came up with the goods when it was needed most.
Shapo is coming up shortly against Taro Daniel.

Zverev is such an #######, he should be suspended for a long time, at least until after the French Open.

I think the most disturbing thing about that video is that after he took his initial swings, he went to the bench, thought about it for a couple of seconds, and then proceeded to swing at the chair again. The ATP has to send a strong message here, I agree with what the Senator said earlier, suspend him from IW and Miami, a significant fine, and I would also subtract 1000 ATP points from his current ranking.

umpire abuse has been fetishized by immortal video clips from McEnroe and Connors, and the fact that this latest scene will get played repeatedly on major sports networks actually works against getting it under control.
it's amazing how passive and meek tennis officials seem to be while getting screamed at, called names or threatened, like it's just baked into the culture. NHL refs have a history of involving themselves too much in the game at times, but they are not afraid to put the hammer down if someone steps over the line.
tennis has given too much leeway to its stars and their personalities (unless you want to skip a press conference then you're toast), officials need to be empowered to do their job without fear of retribution. if an NHL player has a beef with a particular ref, it's not like they can demand that ref not be used for any of their games, but it's something that happens regularly behind the scenes in tennis.

Shapo wins in straight sets 6-4 6-3 over Taro Daniel and will face Berankis in the quarter-finals. Definitely on a collision course with Djoker in the semi-finals.

On the Zverev thing, it's actually kind of awkward to suspend him for it when the immediate response is going to be, "Oh, you'll suspend him for hitting an inanimate object, but you're cool with him hitting his girlfriend".

Vesely takes the first set against Djokovic. They've only played one previous match which Vesely won on clay.

Djocovid expressed sympathy for his pal Abuserev over how that situation went down. not once did he say thing about the umpire that was targeted. I don't think there's a scenario left where I'd actually cheer for him in a match going forward (unless he were playing against Abuserev in which case I'm rooting for stadium collapse)

How does an ultra rich tournament like Dubai not have automatic line calls.
