Interesting press conference from Sutter, as usual. Doesn’t dwell on the loss of Gio, arguably implies that his departure was a necessary part of the team changing the culture. Tough pill to swallow as a fan, but can’t argue with the W’s in the end of the day

Most recent prior coaches have rotated the 7th D through the lineup, either to 'adjust' for another team's composition (eg Prout), to motivate and encourage competition, or simply to keep the 7th guy fresh. I wonder if that pattern is part of why our 3rd pairing has been an especially weak point for the team over the last several seasons.

Instead, carrying Stone as our 7th doesn't compromise Valimaki's icetime. I'd argue the benefit of keeping the 3rd pairing together consistently has outweighed the potential benefit of keeping Stone in game-shape. If the unthinkable happens, we still have Mackey and Valimaki in game-shape and ready to step in if needed for more than a couple of games.
Couldn't disagree more. The Flames need to start working Mackey and Stone in here and there to keep them fresh.

Would Hayden Block be a good place to watch the game?

Yeah i think there has been a lot of uneasy/unsaid stuff in regards to the loss of Gio and the sudden success with the Flames.

Clearly there is way way more to it than just losing him, but the change in leadership and the team "identity" are contributors. Sutter is the biggest part of course and having his guys from day 1 of training camp is huge.

Great player to be sure and nothing changes that but it may be true his captaincy was part of what was holding this club back to some degree.

I loved the pot shot Darryl took at Francis in his pre-game interview.

When asked about how was it trying to replace Gio
"The key was not letting white noise bother us"

He followed it with:
"The same people who were saying "what are we gonna do now" were the same people who were going: "what's wrong with Gio?". And that's a fact, so to sugarcoat it, don't sugar coat it, the same guys that are hugging and padding him on the back were the same guys that were shoving it down his throat too".

Mackey is in Stockton playing a ton...no?

Stone is doing what his job entails and what he was signed up for and is still practicing with the team daily.

None of the dmen are playing a crazy amount of minutes so they should be fine.

Trust Sutter and his deployment of guys...he seems completely dialed in.

Stone can fill in for a game or two. Valimaki and Mackey can fill in if longer. Playing regular minutes with consistency in the AHL is better than interrupted random trips with the team.

Also, given BT’s history, it would not surprise me in the slightest if we brought in another #7 before the deadline

Well if its a RH guy then Stone draws in...if its a LH guy one of Valimaki or Mackey would get called up im assuming.

Same as any other team.

Almost a guarantee IMO...you dont want to be throwing young/inexperienced players into the middle of a playoff series.

Maybe Valimaki gets a call up beforehand if he is tearing up the AHL and has BT convinced he is ready for full time NHL duty, but passed that look for a LH/LD to be added on the cheap at the TDL.

Sutter talked a lot about how much the entire defense changed over. Gio played all 56 games last year, Valimaki played 49, Nesterov and Stone were 38 and 21, respectively.

Kylington played 8 last year. So Kylington steps up to become a very effective top 4 guy this year, and Gudbranson and Zadorov exceeding expectations. That's quite a transformation in personnel and overall performance.

Then you consider that Andersson and Hanifin have both taken another step this year, and Tanev continues to outperform his contract.

Sutter's right. That's a huge transformation on the blue line and a big part of the team's success this year. Gio leaving really is just a small part of that bigger story.

Sometimes change is positive and necessary and is no reflection on the people that left.

IMO it's not so much that Gio in any way held them back bit his leaving allowed for a different dynamic and a bit of a break from the unsuccessful past.

I'd have to think once a playoff spot is locked and maybe to a lesser extent match ups, we'll see a lot more Vladar, Mackey, etc.

Being a looong time Flames fan and used to disappointment, I'd normally add a "knock on wood" to that. I think Sutter has this team so bought in right now though, it's going to be tough to blow it. I'm expecting a decent kick at the cat this year.

Darn, we were so close to Gio coming home to a full crowd. Hopefully the 9000 make for it during the tribute.

Anyone catch Jackie Redmond on NHL network yesterday going OFF on how good the Flames are? Felt nice to have someone absolutely gush over the team we cheer for.

Oh and brought some much needed attention to Mr.Elias Zebulon Lindholm.
