It's not something one would ever do voluntarily, but Tkachuk has a say in all this. If he wants his next contract to make him the highest-paid player on the team, you pretty much have to trade him to a team that can accommodate that. I don't see him being worth more money than Gaudreau.

There is five players that are intriguing and can add some depth up front and on the blue line.
Travis Boyd- Seems to have found a bit of scoring touch, nice add to the RW and can play a bit of center. Plays hard on the pucks from what I remember of seeing him.
Nick Paul- Can play bottom 6, this is who I think Calgary should target as he seems to fit the mold. Physical player.
Andrew Copp- I can't see how Winnipeg doesn't sign him, but would be such a huge pickup for the top 9. Two way player that can add some goals. would need to get a bit creative with the Cap to make it work.
Brett Kulak- Solid defensively, if he is your 6/7 with Zadorov going into the playoffs I think you could do much worse, not as physical as Zadorov, but maybe not as many mistakes. A bit of a rough year, but who hasn't on Montreal.
Andy Greene- This is a great veteran who has went to the eastern finals twice in the last two years, wouldn't be your number 6th guy but a nice number 7

My 2 dream trades for this deadline:
Giordano (with the necessary portion of his salary retained) for 7th round pick - essentially, this would be a truly classy move by Seattle to let Giordano have his last shot at the Cup with the only other team he has played his entire NHL career.
Chara – for a reasonable pick.
This would be the best 4th defense pairing in the league for the playoffs run.

Toffoli should help soften that blow at least a bit.

Gotta think like a contender.
Sign everyone, go over the cap then exploit LTIR to stay compliant. All the top teams should do this until it isn't allowed and the Flames should be doing it too.

The Gio trade is classy but it also signals Ron Francis throwing up his hands in the air saying "please fire me" as it's another wasted expansion draft pick.

Well, yeah but ... that train has left the station long time ago. He didn't do very well at the expansion draft and everyone knows it. They have nothing to gain by keeping Gio to the bitter end of this season. Classy is still classy.

Gio will net them more than a 7th even if he’s only destination is Calgary. I’d happily spend a 3rd for half retained Gio though!

pass on Gio. Absolutely loved the guy, but I'm 100% against those sentimental reunions that could easily become a distraction.

I would maybe dangle the lower 2nd plus a B/C prospect if they take Ritchie and retain salary.

I expect most playoff teas would love to have him.
The lower 2nd isn't particularly good and is likely easily beaten by some team.

Spot on, Gio is an absolute Flames legend and always will be but, we can't fall into the nostalgia trap with former players. The team and room is better (now) without him, and though there are a multitude of additional factors involved in the team being better (without knocking on Gio), why bring old drama back in to a winning room.

I don’t think the room or team is any better because Gio is gone. It is entirely due to Sutter successfully implementing his system and getting full team buy in. If Gio was here it would be the same.
Gio leaving had some great benefits for the Flames indirectly. Kylington seizing an opportunity that existed because Gio left. Coleman coming in with the cap space created. Zadorov being acquired is another.
I am very happy with the blueline now but if someone goes down with injury Gio would jump to the top of my list of guys to bring in

Not mine. The team has no cap space to speak of and there isn't a $6.75-million defenceman on the roster. It would take multiple injuries and/or retention just to fit him in at the deadline. For the role he would be playing, there are much cheaper options.

Yeah, not in favor of bringing in Gio on a number of levels. It messes with the room dynamic, it displaces someone in Kylington or Zadorov that both bring unique elements that the team sorely needs, and the cap/acquisition cost don't jive.
If we're chasing that kind of cap I'd hope it's to improve the team down the middle up front.

Do the Flames really need a minute eating defenceman? I wouldn't want to mess with the chemistry to much. The current top 4 pairings look great. The bottom pairing of Zadorov/Gudbranson is solid and punches face.
If anything, maybe a PP specialist who has a bomb from the point could be useful. That could really open up things for Johnny on the PP. Basically giving him another trigger to pass into.

I'm indifferent about bringing Gio back, but if we had a bottom pairing of Gudbranson and Gio, as well as Zadorov has been playing, it would most definitely be an upgrade. Also, what drama are you referring to? How would the addition of Gio make the room worse?

^^ I don't think bringing Gio back would make for a bad room just potential for the reunion to cause a distraction.
