I wish the NHL had two awards for defensemen - the existing one, which I think is best overall defenseman (with an obvious lean to guys who get points as well) and a new one for best defensive defenseman. Tanev would be a nominee for this second award.

They can call it the Rod Langway.

Or maybe he allowed the coach to help him with some gm-ing. Which is smart on his part. Not GM of the year winning.

and I don't have much of a bias. I have like 2 posts in the Fire Brad thread.

I blame him for our 98lb weakling team that he assembled for the years before this.

How awesome is it to hear that we are "tough" to play against?
Tanev was excellent last year
Markstrom was good until he got hurt then struggled.

But I get it
When it's a mistake it's his fault, when it's a good move it's someone else that should be credited.

Yup. And I didn't know this, but Langway was a minus player only once in his 15 season career - his last one. I also didn't know he was born in Taiwan!

I don't know why but he was my favourite non-flame dman. Must have been the moustache and the no helmet.

hey i don't want him fired. He has done an adequate job to build most of this team. Just saying it's not award winning.

I particularly enjoyed how a ton of people freaked and pulled out the pitchforks after missing out on Eichel. A guy making $10mil and broken neck who wasn't a free agent..

I suppose Johnny would get the Lindsay as well. Trouble is I don’t think he gets the kudos from other players like some guys who are wowed by McDavid. If he runs away with the points, sure.

JG should get votes for the Hart, Selke, and Lady Byng and will win at least one of them.

Now you get it. I like your post, but I'll give the "thanks" to someone else.

Markstrom has to be in the top 4-5 for the vezina candidates at this point. He’s been so steady and his numbers keep getting better.

On a more specific note about marskstrom… I honestly think he is one of the best puck-handling goaltenders the flames have had in the last 20 years. I don’t mean in overall ability or skills - obviously Smith has been the best in terms of puck handling skills for recent flames goaltenders - but more importantly on decision-making. Love the simple, smart setups that Markstrom does consistently and pretty safely.

Obvious in the span of a season, every goaltender has a few giveaways that cost goals… but Markstrom has managed to make that a rarity and he doesn’t try to do too much but he isn’t afraid to make a play… he is just a smart goaltender all around. Smith drove me crazy when he was here cause it often felt like he wasn’t making the best play… instead, he was trying to show off or “do it all himself”. So annoying.

Who will be the Flames Masterson nominee this year? Lucic maybe?

Yup. A good puckhandling goalie stops the ring around, and makes a nice confident pass to avoid a forechecker. Smiths long range passes either missed or made the forward stop or slow to receive it. Not a big advantage.

Confuses the hell out of set structure as well. Way more harm than good.

He should probably win it if they win a couple rounds. This team has been totally transformed over the past two years.

It ####s with systems so bad that the Flames had their back up at the time working in the same garbage. Mike Smith is a selfish disaster of a teammate.
