This is one of the more helpful articles I’ve read throughout the pandemic - it’s a study from 2013 that looks at how the prevalence of infectious disease impacts a society’s relationship with authoritarian governance.
The disease is real. As long as it remains a threat, a significant plurality of the population is going to be in favour of whatever restrictions and measures are required to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
Because dying of a communicable disease is on nobody’s list of ways to go.
I’m sure there have been “trucker convoys” of one form or another in every pandemic that’s ever occurred. They’re not special, they’re not unique, and they will not win.
Similarly, the government will not retain emergency powers like it’s V for Vendetta. (Ironically, the 160k UK citizens who have died of COVID eclipses the number killed in V for Vendetta that led to the rise of fascist England by 60,000)
Onward.

Anyways, Elon Musk decided to weigh-in today with his exceptional brand of brain dead tastelessness. Can't believe there are still dudes out there who simp like 14 year-old girls for the guy.

Responding to a tweet describing how Trudeau’s government had ordered banks to help cut funding to the protesters, Musk posted a meme of a photo of Hitler, with “Stop comparing me to Justin Trudeau” written above his head and “I had a budget” below it.

I find that continually expressing my extremely conservative viewpoints in the most passive-aggressive, deflective and condescending manner possible is the best way to communicate to others on a hockey message board.

Or better yet, if you are Elon Musk, just shut the #### up about it already. His legion of Telsa-Stans are easily swayed, and it certainly doesn't help anything.

Fair point from Reddit on part of why Musk might have it out for Trudeau:
The absence of Tesla products from the iZEV Program list explains the hate. Trudeau's Liberals put a $45,000 ceiling on the price of cars eligible for the program, so Musk is acting out as he does so frequently.
Tesla priced themselves out of that iZEV program by increasing their own prices past the cap amount. Has nothing to do with the Liberals.

So long as you do this while ensuring you label those you disagree with as an angry mob run purely on emotion instead of intellect, you get to tell yourself you are morally superior and a shining example of how to engage in political discussion.
There's a good quote by Roosevelt that some people should read. He was no fan of the critics who never act. He was even less a fan of the critics of the critics who do nothing at all:
Quote:
The poorest way to face life is to face it with a sneer. There are many men who feel a kind of twister pride in cynicism; there are many who confine themselves to criticism of the way others do what they themselves dare not even attempt. There is no more unhealthy being, no man less worthy of respect, than he who either really holds, or feigns to hold, an attitude of sneering disbelief toward all that is great and lofty, whether in achievement or in that noble effort which, even if it fails, comes to second achievement. A cynical habit of thought and speech, a readiness to criticise work which the critic himself never tries to perform, an intellectual aloofness which will not accept contact with life's realities - all these are marks, not as the possessor would fain to think, of superiority but of weakness. They mark the men unfit to bear their part painfully in the stern strife of living, who seek, in the affection of contempt for the achievements of others, to hide from others and from themselves in their own weakness. The role is easy; there is none easier, save only the role of the man who sneers alike at both criticism and performance.
|
Needless to say, there have always been people that have felt great comfort in the self-righteousness and moral superiority of criticising the critics, the absolute easiest of positions to take. To engage in an issue only by engaging with and criticising those outside of it and never with the issue itself, takes no effort or intellect. But history has always viewed those people as weakest among us, and least worthy of our respect.
It's difficult, I think, to fully understand something like the convoy from a message board in Calgary. Few will really be able to, so people try to take in as much info as they can, but it'll never be the same as being there (thanks for the updates and your efforts, DevilsAdvocate).
It's much, much easier to fully understand those who you are actually speaking with on a daily basis. It's a wonder then why some can't even muster the energy to do that. Feels good to call them an angry mob and log off, I guess. Asking questions is a difficult thing. You might have to listen to the answer.

I've heard him described as the closest thing the world has ever had to a James Bond villain. That seems right.

I just see a bunch of grown adults being bickering children.
Think if they spent the past month at home taking care of their family and growing a business instead of out banging pots on a street corner.
What a ####ing waste of time.

Watching the Ottawalks live stream it looks like the large LoadSafe rig is rolling out. One of the larger trucks at the protest.

I didn’t specify one way or another, did I? Clearly the far right are worse. But it’s not the far right filling this thread and others on CP with hate-posts and attacking anyone who dissents.
Why rage about bad behaviour you can’t control rather than try to improve your own behaviour? I don’t get it.
