I saw Clutterbuck is on the block and TFP mentions he could be had for a mid round pick with half the salary retained. He is a solid bottom 6 winger who hits everything. Flames don’t really need wing help but who knows between now and the deadline?

And I seem to remember that for the single game that Brennan Evans suited up for he played his lone shift to start the game and then not again for the rest of the playoffs.

Just looked and he dressed for 2 games and played 6 minutes total. 32 seconds in one shift in game 3 win. 5 minutes and 11sec in 8 shifts in game 4 loss.

I was thinking just that at the game last week. He still looks really solid on ice and plays good minutes. That would be a super solid addition. Lucic and Chara are really good pals. Maybe? Perhaps? Possibly?

One issue with Chara is his performance bonuses for the acquiring team.
If those bonuses are hit and the team doesn't have the cap space to cover them this season, they roll over to next season's cap.
Maybe not a big deal if you think Chara is the final piece for a long cup run, but that is up to $750k less cap space to work with next season. For a team like the Flames with potentially big contracts to sign next season, it is a concern.
Recall that one of the reasons no playoff teams took a flyer after the Flames and Jagr were done was his performance bonuses too.

I would LOVE him Cal on our fourth line. And it’s just because I really want a Flames Clutterbuck jersey.
On another note, did anyone watch any of the Team Canada mens? How did Eric Staal look?

I look at the Flames and they have six defensemen that have been playing well all year. They have Stone, Valimaki, Mackey and Kinnvail already in the system.
Is that veteran defenseman they could add really that much better than those four guys that they will give up a significant asset?
If they can get someone for a long-shot prospect or a late pick, I am okay with that, but trading a second rounder for a guy marginally better than those four makes no sense to me.
|
I'm of the belief that you need at least 8 or 9 legitimate NHL defensemen for a deep playoff run. Problem with defensemen is that if they make a mistake, it usually ends up in the back of your net. Can't allow guys like Valimaki, Mackey or Kinnvall costing us goals come playoffs if we want to make a run, in case of injuries.
A veteran defenseman for a 2nd or 3rd round pick is a small price to pay for a deep run with a good team, which I think this team is. A 2nd or 3rd for a depth defenseman is only a waste of an asset when you're a bubble team - then they have almost no impact.

We will for sure be getting another D-man, it’s just a matter of who, when, and for how much.

Yeah he was dealing with some injuries, but he really wanted to continue his NHL career.

Imagine having to face at least one of either Zadorov, Gudbransson, or Chara, every shift for a playoff series?

Is Chara any good still, or are they just Weekend at Bernie-ing him at this point? I have not really been paying attention.
I think with our big defensemen, at least they can skate. Gudbranson won't win many foot races, but he can still move OK for a big guy. Zadorov is deceptively fast in the right situations. Kylington is very fast. Andersson definitely has a motor when he uses. Hanifin is also OK. Tanev is probably average.
I would hate to bring Chara in if he was just a lump out there. It probably wouldn't be a good fit.

He also looked old when Calgary played them at home the other night . Hes had a tough year on a struggling team. He's old. Wish him the best.

I can't see them adding an expensive dman that would slot into the top 6. Hard to push any of those guys out right now. Maybe a 7th dman with a left shot that has kore experience than Valimaki and Mackey.

I have a feeling that Valimaki is going to be used as a trade chip to get back another more ready defenseman. Just a hunch, I just don't think Sutter cares much for him.
