Default Court Date - Need advice!

Hello pals,

I'm a rookie to the court room and I'm going to be fighting a jaywalking ticket tomorrow.

I've never been before, but the plan is to go in early, around 8.

Planning to plead guilty and just see if I can get the cost cut in half or even thrown out. I have a clean record.

Any tips/hints would be appreciated folks.

Now why on Earth would you go and do a silly thing like tell the truth when it was that idiot cop's fault for giving you the ticket in the first place. In fact, it's YOU who should be suing HIM for wasting your time like this.

I'm just confused as to how your driving record has anything to do with the fact that you jaywalk at all....

The point is I have a clean record.

Anyone care to contribute to this thread as opposed to derailing it?

Thanks : )

Firstly...like others have said...this wont effect your drivers license either way. But I know you probably can get the cost cut in half, maybe even tossed out all together...its pretty easy. Go early and tell the justice of the peace you want to talk to the proseucutor...ussually takes 30-40 mins and then you go in and speak to the guy. Make up some kinda story how you were in a rush and it was a bad mistake and will never do it again, but dont feel you deserve the ticket...I guarantee you walk out paying less then the tickets worth.

Thanks for the memory jog. I have a ticket due tommorow. I think I'll just pay the $150, and work. The client might get a little touchy if I take the morning off.

Then don't plead guilty or talk to the JP. Instead, you'll go in front of the judge.

Pleading guilty = Paying ticket.

If I were you, I would pay it. You seem a bit confused as to what is going on.

I'll tell you what not to do.

Don't try to fight it in court, lose, and then jay walk outside the court house and get another ticket.

Buddy of mine did that. Pretty darn funny.

Wait to see if the cop shows up. If he does not, the charge would be thrown out?

The cop will be there. I don't think it is very common at all for them to not show up. For one thing, if they are working, they may even HAVE to be there, not positive though. But if he isn't working, he gets paid probably for the full day to go to court. I say he makes it.

Please post results tomorrow of your fighting the probably justified ticket.

I suppose my question would be: do you have a defense? Other than just being opposed to jaywalking tickets?

Meh. That's the thing, I'm just going to pay it. My only defense would be the cop not charging the druggies shooting up on the same block. And that's a terrible defense and has nothing to do with my offense.

I still havent decided, I'll update if I still go in.

Did you Jayalk? No? Fight it... Oh wait, yes you did? Own up then. It's $57, and it's not like Herpees. It's a ticket. There's no three strikes when it comes to jaywalking.

Yeah, as you said that really isn't a good defense. The flip side (for them anyways) is that because you jaywalked, they were prevented from attending to other police matters.

Let me guess- it was going across 7th ave at the 8th street LRT station?

It was across from the shisha bar onto that filthy strip mall.

They blocked the sidewalk and wrote all 3 of us tickets. Meanwhile drug deals are being made on the same block. Brilliant?

I fought and beat a traffic ticket that way. Prosecutor told the judge the officer was on holidays. The judge then said "case dismissed"
