The next move will almost certainly be a depth defenseman, as it should be.

If Monahan doesn't take the opportunity here, I could see him being traded to a non-contender for a better C, with additional consideration.

I actually hope we don't do anything else. Depth D would be nice, but Stone, Val and Mackey aren't the worst

I've posted it before, but Stone has played 70 games since the start of the 2018 season. Valimaki and Mackey have combined for 87 NHL games.
I wouldn't be confident if any of those guys had to step into a playoff game this season.
Given how we are positioning ourselves for a run, paying a 3rd round pick for some bottom pairing insurance seems like the prudent thing to do.

I would be okay with either Stone or Valimaki having to fill in, but wouldn't want both in the line up at the same time.
My vote is on Chara if he would be willing to come here.

Actually Stone seemed fine everytime he had to step in.

on Insider Trading Dreger says that the price to include Chiarot into the Toffoli trade got to be too rich for the Flames.
he expects the Flames to add a depth d-man and maybe a depth forward
Lebrun says the Flames may circle back to Chiarot
Habs may just take the best offer they have on the table for chiarot and just run with after injury scare

I wonder if Treliving doesn't wait out the 1st rd pick ask from Montreal and willing to dangle a 2nd round pick should the price drop.
Wouldn't be where I'd spend that asset, but could see that being in play for Chiariot.

Never play your insurance guys
Be shocked when they can’t provide insurance
Stone and Valimaki were more than good enough last time they played. Mackey probably would be good enough. Don’t need to spend assets on trash tier players just to have them not play.

A depth forward? Apparently Arizona's been dangling the LandPhil at 50% for a 3rd and no one's biting lol. Could probably be had for the 2022 5th and a cap dump at this point (Ritchie/Richardson/both).

Exec: Penguins say no, almost zero percent chance you get a second-round pick for Phil Kessel. The Coyotes have offered him around for a third-round pick while retaining 50 percent and haven’t gotten a buyer yet.

I will stubbornly beat the Kessel drum til he gets traded elsewhere

Interesting note in Friedman's 32 thoughts, perhaps confirming what some suspected. Giroux wouldn't waive his NTC for Calgary.

Giroux is the best offensive player available, but that option wasn’t available to the Flames.

But where do the Flames clear 4m? It isn't gonna be Monahan. Even with Ruzicka blossoming before our very eyes we'd still be woefully short at center. Unless one thinks swapping mangiapane off of RW on line 2 for Toffoli, moving Mangiapane to LW with Dube at C and Kessel at RW.
Is that a better roster make up? I honestly don't know.
And with the rumors of ownership nixing a few Monahan deals already, I'm gonna go out on limb and say he ain't moving until he hits FA.
I dont know, I like the roster composition as it is with Toffolis arrival. It's strong. Really strong.

What about a deal around Dube and DeBrusk? Further change that 3rd line. Cap hits are relatively close, 1.3 mil more for DeBrusk so Flames would have to send Ritchie or Richardson down and go with 13 fwds. If cap room is needed next year you let DeBrusk walk and replace him with Pelletier.
Might be a nice change for both players.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Flames have picks in rounds 2, 5 and 7 remaining for the 2022 draft. Is that right?

The way I look at this team right now, we still need to address the third line in a bad way to go deep.
I know this isn't a technical analysis but hear me out :
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk = Combined +100
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman = Combined +24
Dube - Monahan - Ritchie = Combined - 30
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis = Combined +3
What this tells me is our supposed "3rd" Line is caving us in and is our weakest link. Lets be honest Sean should be eating popcorn on a nightly basis.
Brad needs to go out and address the 3 C situation, I think at this point Monahan not playing will actually help the team.
Get McCann and get him now. Absolutely perfect player for that third line.
