The man has a young family and $67M in career earnings.

I get that playing in the NHL is awesome, but considering he was on the verge of hanging them up a couple years ago, I don’t think he’s necessarily keen to fight people for a paltry million.

Especially if the reward is that he gets to fight people again for $1-2M.
Lucic talking about hanging them up was after a brutal 2 years in Edmonton and his poor usage by brutal former NHL coach Bill Peters. When Ward took over and later Sutter Lucic has rediscovered his love of the game. He is an overpaid but important part of the team. Complete wishful thinking that he is looking to retire next season. He is more likely to sign an extension than retire in my opinion.

I also think Lucic will be a top 9 forward for this team when the playoffs begin and will play a key role for the club

Lucic is overpaid and will be next year. But not to the degree we all feared. Most teams have an older guy or two being overpaid by at least as much.

He’s been quiet lately but his line assignment is off IMO. I’d like to see him and Monahan on a line together, with either Dube or maybe a call-up.

I expect there would be ways around that - maybe he can’t have a press conference and tweet his farewells, but if he doesn’t want to put himself through the grind, he doesn’t have to.

All he has to do is come in to camp, complain of “headaches” and he’ll be on LTIR for the season.

That's a far cry from retiring.

In any event, don't expect the Flames to put a healthy guy on LTIR and then essentially pay extra money for another player. That's simply not the way they operate.

Plus he doesn't have any intention of retiring, he wants to play. You can see how much fun he is having, and it shows in his play.

He is also the type of player that tends to push through in the playoffs, especially after the whistle get put away. I predict that is where we will see him really earn his pay cheque.

You have to think that both Johnny Gaudreau's and Matthew Tkachuk's current contracts may be favorable for them to re-sign with the Flames because both were paid quite well.

6 years and 6.75M for Gaudreau and 3 years $7M for Tkachuk.

Lindholm is a bargain at $4.850M over 6 years.

It shows the Flames are not afraid to pay their top players and will do it again.

While I don’t doubt that Calgary is prepared to play their top players, there is nothing in those contracts to suggest this.

Both Johnny and a Tkachuk only signed after protracted negotiations. That in itself is not unusual, but it doesn’t suggest an easy negotiation.

“You guys were so generous with me on my last contract, sure I’ll sign”

Said no player ever.

Offseason quotes from Gaudreau:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/johnny-...flames/sn-amp/

Quote from Treliving earlier this week:

‘We want Johnny here. We want him long term’ for those who don’t subscribe.

You are the one that continues to claim that he would have signed some team-friendly long term deal. So put your money where your mouth is, and tell us what you think he could have been signed for.

Yes and it would’ve been Treliving’s tough negotiation tactics that could’ve landed a reasonable and manageable long term contract with Mangiapane. These are scenarios that GMs have to wrestle with all the time, long term vs short term, it’s risk vs reward.

If I was to have ventured a guess, it could’ve looked something like $3.95M give or take. We all know how Treliving likes to end his deals with a .05 at the end. Had a deal ended up around the same ball park as his pal Rasmus Andersson, I wouldn’t have hated that.

It’s certainly better than the 1 year qualifying offer his agent went on record to say he wants Mangiapane to take this summer to get him to unrestricted free agency; either that or Mangiapane likely wants one heck of an offer which should be a very high cap hit considering he’s on pace to lead the team with 44 goals.

If we trade Monahan for no cap coming back and filled the roster near league min, we'd be looking at about 26.5M to fill these 4 slots:

Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Mangiapane
Kylington

1x9M for Tkachuk, 8x6.25M for Mangi, 1x1.5M for OK would leave 9.75AAV available. Obviously you can wiggle each of these around a bit, but it's pretty darn tight (unless you try to trim Dubé and Valimaki AAVs or go 1 year on Mangi)

That’s an unrealistic if. Cap is just too valuable these days.

There's no way Kylington signs for that little after the season he's having. I wish 1.5 were possible.
And wouldn't it be 33 million?

Last year was a different year due to covid but Matthew Tkachuk already has more goals (21) this year in 45 games then he did all last season when he scored 16 in 56 games.

I think he's a better and more rounded player than just one season ago, it probably has some to do with coach Sutter.

I'm sure there was people that wondered if $7M wasn't too much per year for his current contract but the Flames still paid him.

Looks to me like Mangi is going to be a back up plan so yo speak. The Flames will obviously try as hard as they can to get both Gaudreau and Tkachuk extended, if they can then Mangiapane probably becomes trade bait. Especially now that Toffoli is here.

If they miss on either or both then they will work to extend Mangi

Competent C's might be the only thing more scarce than cap space...

My plausible suggestion du jour is Monahan+B prospect for Borgen + 4th. SEA has only Donskoi as potential TDL sale next year.

But if we can't subtract his full AAV it shows that keeping everyone will be impossible.

Didn't give OK any thought beyond "let's just say Valimaki's number" - I'm sure you're right. Pretty sure the math is sound, though (used CF armchair GM)...

A lot of unnecessary drama in a dream I had last night where in the dream, I did a slow reveal of the terms of the deal in the headline that Calgary re-signed Johnny for and it ended up being $11M per year for 7 years. Since it appeared in my dream, it will be done.

I'm not certain Monny is a competent C any longer.

You won't get rid of his cap hit for a B prospect.

They can always sign UFA"s to one years contracts to flip if need be. They don't need to take on Monny's massive cap hit.

Maybe we have to incentivize someone to take Monahan off our hands, that would mean trading Mangiapane as a sweetner?

I'd much rather lose Bread than Johnny and/or Tkachuk and Bread's value is soon to be at an all-time high.

I had a dream that I was a Styrofoam Gumby trying to solve my own murder. Hopefully it means nothing.
