What does lottery protected mean here exactly? What's deemed a lottery pick? (Top3,5,10,16)??
Top 10.

And it won't be. So it will be the 2022 1st (near a 2nd round pick).

The first rounder is 2022.
And protected means top ten in this instance.

I know they like having Monahan for faceoffs on PP1 but I hope they replace him with Toffoli, who appears to be another player with great hands in tight and a penchant for deflecting pucks. Essentially a prime Monahan.

If the 2022 1st is a top 10 pick, the Habs get the Flames 2023 1st and a 4th round pick instead

I believe it is top 10 protected pick for 2022.

I believe the deal is a protected 2022 1st round pick. If we end up in the top 10 this year, it slides to next year as an unprotected pick I believe. I really don't think that is an issue that we'll need to worry too much about. We are pretty deep right now so even an injury to a significant player likely wouldn't cripple us.

I'm pretty confident our 2022 pick wont be top 10, if it is then we have bigger problems I think.

But which contenders have added a top line player using this method for a playoff run?

Tampa used it to keep all their existing players, plus add Savard last year sure.

The Blackhawks used it to help add Antoine Vermette. But you don't see these bigger name types added with this.

If anything I think Treliving and the Flames are seeing things come back in Monahan's game to the point where they decided they better find someone better than Brett Ritchie to try on that line. Hence why the move is made now. If this can get guys like Monahan and Dube back to life, their Deadline shopping list might be a bit different than if one or both of them keep struggling.
I think you're forgetting about Vegas who is doing this right now.

Doesn't make much sense to take your leading goal scorer off PP2.

I mean I love the player but maybe the absolute best part of this that I will hopefully NEVER have to watch Brett Ritchie again

What a great thing to see in between flights before basic training for the US Army.

Won’t be able to religiously watch and talk the Flames throughout this year but you know I’ll be thinking of them in South Carolina and then further training in Georgia.

Welcome Tyler, Go Flames! I cannot wait to see future highlights!

It is an added bonus to be sure, and a welcome one.

lol this again

I can almost guarantee Tre made him an offer, UFA can go to any team they want the Flames can't just match or slightly beat any offer
