With Nations League windows coming up I’m sure Edmonton and Vancouver will get matches then

Not sure I would want a game in late march in Edmonton. That could still be potentially frigid. At least end of March in Toronto is closer to actual spring weather.

Do friendlies also count/impact rankings?

Canada versus Jamaica in an outdoor venue, in Edmonton, in March... why exactly wouldn't we as Canadians want this matchup?

Kind of like Canada playing Honduras in St. John's 10°C September weather to qualify in 1985. I'll take that thanks!

I don't want that. I live here. It will be cold.

Because we can shred Jamaica apart with crisp passes on lush grass.

A snowy/icy artificial turf field turns it into a hoofball track meet and takes away our skill advantage.

Yes, but I can attend said hoofball match and so I would be happy.

Yes, but not as much. There's a whole range of game weightings from friendlies to the World Cup final. The big games for Pot 3 are the remaining qualifiers, but if there are any friendlies before the draw they could matter too, which might affect which teams we'd want as opponents. If we're in position, we'd want "safe" matchups whereas if we're not, we might want opponents opponents who are high enough ranked that the point we'd need are available. After the draw, I think we'd just look for quality competition though.

The draw is April 3. Three days after Panama-Canada

We better get a premium South American or European opponent in a summer friendly. And when I say premium, I mean BRA, ARG, ENG, ITA etc.
Playing in Toronto was probably never in doubt, unless it was Canada and Jamaica for the 3rd or 4th spot and then maybe they’d do Edmonton for the weather.

But, with this game being the homecoming for a team that had qualified for the WC a few days earlier, or as the game that could clinch a WC spot, no way any market except the CSA’s home market and the country’s media market home, would get the game.

Lord, please let us have 1 thread that doesn't get into politics ffs.

On topic - I thought the Pot #s were all driven by FIFA rankings, which were pseudo science and behind closed doors? How are people calculating pot #s, or are they just guessing FIFAs ranking based on our performance?

This is good news. Maybe he still misses the March window, but as long as he's fit for November it doesn't really matter to me.

TFC have been playing lots of young Canadian players during preseason. I could see a player from there bursting on the CMNT scene if they have a hot start to the MLS season (JMR, Shaff, Kerr etc)

The rankings are open now, you can calculate it according to the formula.

Good sequence of tweets on Edmontons 2026 chances to host by local soccer reporter.

Not a surprise. All it has going for it is capacity.

The field surface is far too expansive meaning the ends of the stadium are useless. The sidelines are too wide/large as the 8 lane track basically is still there in spirit. Major renovations would be needed to fix those issues permanently. Not sure they’d want temporary stands behind the nets.

The amenities and concourse are as basic as McMahon. Not that it matters much to FIFA, but the parking and ingress and egress are very poor.

Toronto and BC Place and call it a day. Canada shouldn’t be travelling all over the country for their 3 group games but I assume thats what the CSA want and why they would have 3 venues.
