With the way the Backlund line is going, this is the secondary scoring the team has been craving for. All season long I’ve been hoping Sutter would just stick Backlund and Mangiapane together because they’re such a dynamic pair. So hopefully that stays for good and we won’t have to talk about splitting them up again. But I’m also a little torn now with the idea that the team should completely empty the clip for this playoff run or use the 1st in the summer to further improve the team for next season.
On one hand, management could add a huge piece like a Giroux or Hertl to shore up the top/middle 6 or can they add something intermediary to the bottom 6 to improve depth and then trade the 1st in the summer for more of a long term approach. Should be an intriguing trade deadline next month.

I like Andrew Copp, thought he was one of Winnipeg’s best skaters in the series vs the Flames. Not sure if the Jets will part with him though since they’ve still got their eyes on the playoffs. If he’s available and can be acquired at a reasonable price, he instantly becomes one of the more ideal players I think the Flames should look at.

You could probably add Primeau, Caufeild, and Romonov to the list. I also think the only way Price leaves is if he wants to.
Montreal, like most Canadian teams, seem to be beholden to this idea that 'rebuild' is a dirty word. I could seem them facing the obvious and letting this year slip away but come the offseason the talk will be 'we intend to compete and get back in the playoffs'. or at least that wouldn't be a surprise.
Interesting to hear the price on Anderson. Given the term and dollars on his deal I thought he could be had for less than what MTL gave up to get him. He's my dark horse TDL acquisition.

Josh Anderson's contract is a non-starter.

Josh Anderson is a perfect player for Sutter. But I don’t like Josh Anderson’s contract. If the Flames are going to improve they need to get more value from their precious little cap space.

Big no thanks to Anderson with that contract and his injury history. Toffoli is a dream addition imo.

I was all-in about a week ago and I still am, but the resurgence if Backlund with Mangiapane and Coleman makes me readjust how much we want or need to bring in. I don't know if it's worth the price tag for a Giroux or Hertl.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis
Those 3 lines are fantastic right now, shouldn't change a thing.
Dube - Monahan - Ritchie
Yikes. This line needs to be improved. It's been a tough stretch for Dube, Ritchie needs to fall down to 13th forward. Definitely want a RW for this line and Toffoli is still my perfect choice for that line. Dube needs to either get going, or we need to let one of the other AHL players come up, waive Ritchie and have Dube spend a couple games watching as the 13th forward.

Toffoli for sure, and Jarnkrok if you can snag for middle six adds.

I really don't see a need for Chiarot, especially at the reported asking price.

Chiarot doesn't fill a need. Let another team overpay for him.

I really hope Brad isn't trading for him, if he is in it to drive up the price for the other teams, then go for it.

Nine points and -27 and they expect a first? Would Johnny be worth 8 firsts at the deadline then?

If Toffoli is the one we think we should get and the media is speculating that the Flames are interested in Toffoli then, we're not getting Tyler Toffoli. We'll get some KHL defenseman named Taylor Toffolski that nobody's heard of.

Adding chiarot at rumored price would be a huge fail. Ditto Josh Anderson. Steer wide of both.

On the other hand, his playoff numbers are pedestrian, and he was 9th F in TOI at 14:30 last year for MTL (though #4-9 all ranged from 15:32-14:30 and most of the 4th liners were over 13:30)...though his 5 EVG tied him for 1st on MTL (and 2nd in overall goals).
The contract is bad, but...
Coleman 345gp 81g 146p (also only 5 career PPG)
J Anderson 355gp 91g 156p
Obviously Coleman is a very different case making the league at age 25, but his contract will take him through to age 36.5 when it expires in 2027. Anderson will turn 33 in May 2027 when his contract expires, too.
Coleman's deal has a full NTC for first 3 years (vs. Anderson 8 team no-go list for the same period) and then 10 team yes trade list last 3 (Anderson 5 team NO).
All those factors considered the deals are very similar value. A theoretical question to ask would be whether you would trade Coleman for him straight up? Anderson's deal will also cost $3M more salary than the remaining AAV...$22M of which over the next three seasons which will not be very appetizing to most owners.
I wouldn't pay much for him, but I'd strongly consider a 1 for 1 deal for Monahan. Not sure if the 875k savings next year would be enough, but it's also a question of how else Monahan might be moved.
|
I would do this in a heartbeat. Coleman's deal goes to his late thirties. But Coleman wouldn't go for it.
