I got a kick out of the NYI broadcast pre-game coverage.
Butch Goring was talking about how good Tkachuk has been, and said Matthew plays similar to his dad Keith did in the NHL during the 70s and 80s. Keith's career spanned 1992-2010, so he was only off by 2 decades. Goring played in the 70s and 80s, so you'd think he would remember if he played against Keith or not.
Remember Butch wore that paper thin weird little one off helmet his whole career….could have something to do with it….

Like Pat I don't think the Flames are in the Florida/Carolina/Colorado/Tampa class, but what addition(s) do you think could allow them to stand a chance in the ring with those teams?
IMO Pavelski or Miller could allow them to push one of those teams 7 games, if the rest of their game is tight.
This team is something else. Top line has been money all year. Second half Backs is rounding into form, mangiapane is a cold blooded sniper and Coleman is getting hot. Lucic has been awesome, he and the third line have been beasts and I have noticed the opposition all year seems to give them a lot of space out of fear of getting stapled to the boards (side note where the hell did Ruzicka come from???). Now the 4th line hasn’t been a liability but there is some room for improvement. I can’t remember a more complete team. As much as I loved the ‘04 team, this team is better. Can’t wait to see the run these guys are gonna go on!!!
Anything can happen in the playoffs, but this looks like the most complete Flames team I've watched since the early 90s. So much good happening right now.
I feel like I post this in every PGT, but this team is something else this season.
What Sutter has been able to do with the lineup, feels like pure magic. Getting the best out of every player, and there is buy in throughout the lineup.
Great start to the home stretch, and hopefully they are able to continue this.
And they managed to keep near a .600 pace when they were playing the least home games in the league.
They're just equalizing with the rest of the league now.

Miller definitely, means more than a Pavelski or Girioux with Sutters type of play.
Tofolli lesser but because he knows a Sutter type of style already.

Keiths nick name is "Big Walt", coined after Walter Tkaczuk, a star center who played for the New York Rangers from 1967 to 1981.
Close but no cigar

The Isles have leaks guarding the house. That pass should not have gotten through with so many back. Barzal and Clutterbuck watching.

What are we doing? This team is so frustrating.

You knew when all 5 of them were in the damn crease that this shift would be a goal. Ugh

My god that was horrific team defending.

I guess we’re just never gonna score the first goal again, are we?

He wasn't on the ice but still expecting some here to blame Bailey for that last goal. Just because.

Hockey hasn’t been fun all year, this is back to being unwatchable

Seriously, two shifts since the goal have ended up with all 5 skaters in front of Sorokin. How is our defensive game so completely stripped?
Everyone Wants a Tkachuk

A game with Tkachuk in it is rarely quiet. There are some big boys in this game.

I’d Kill for Mathew Tkachuck on the isles.
Tkachuck- Barzal- Wally
Gudreau too for that matter.
Quote:
Tkachuk is a type of player the Isles can use, someone that drags a team into the fight. Someone with emotion. Have not seen the Isles with emotion this year.
Bailey had the wined up. And then froze. Come the #### on. Why is he on the pp. GET HIM OFF THE PP
Quote:
Bailey is just… I don’t even know what to say anymore. One-time the puck you dense SOB
Quote:
Gotta keep Bailey on that pp, now matter how ####ty he is.
Quote:
this team needs a shakeup real bad.
well, that and a ####ing goal scorer lmao. I know we've all complained about it to death over these past few seasons, but the dump and chase + "HEY LOOK I'M AT THE NET I HAVE A WIDE OPEN SHOT I'M GONNA ....PASS!" is slowly killing me.
if we're tanking though, the question is; which is the team i'm rooting for this season
maybe i'll root for toews over with the avs, i dunno. they have nice uniforms and they're doing well
Quote:
Bench Bailey for the 3rd. Doesn’t one time the pass and then gives his usual dog #### effort in trying to regain the puck.

How about bench him for the 3rd, then forever!

deflection. shouldnt have given it up center ice.

That was deflected by Parise, can't really blame Sorokin there.
Quote:
Zero killer instinct on this team. If there's momentum they'll find a way to squander it.
Quote:
Oof. Brutal late goal again. That cannot go in.
Quote:
Why would you try to block that, Parise
it’s a f***ing unscreened shot from a stationary shooter
Quote:
I hate this team.

Jeez the wheels sort of coming off the second they scored that goal

Hey, at least two goals have been scored by Islanders players tonight.
Oh wait… Parise put it in the wrong net.

Barry Trotz in 2 acts

Today, on the eve of second game of B2B, 3rd in 4 nights: via Gross
Barry Trotz says he's inclined to use same skaters tonight but, if he does make a change, Kyle Palmieri will go in.
I'm calling it, I've kept the criticism to individual moves ... but now, I'm just too sick and tired of the doublespeak, the scapegoating, the protection of egos over on-ice results ....
You're a ####ing joke Barry
Quote:
Our entire offense revolves around skating the puck behind the net and turning it over while 3 of our players are still in the neutral zone. This is the opposite of good. One might even call it bad.
Quote:
The system is only good if it works. This system worked well for 3 seasons, but it clearly isn’t working now. The new lines worked for 1 game (really 1 period), but they are the opposite of what this team ought to be doing. Rolling 4 roughly equal lines worked from the time Pageau was acquired up until game 7 (well really 6) of the 2021 semifinals.
Now this team just doesn’t have enough offense to spread it around the lineup, and it really needs to stack the top 2 lines with the best offensive players (including Wahlstrom) and give them more minutes and leeway. Otherwise this team will just generally keep losing 3-1 against a decent or better team like last night.
What’s weird is that pre-Pageau and especially post-Filppula, Trotz recognized that he couldn’t just roll 4 lines. Why can’t he recognize it now?
Quote:
Unwatchable. Stupid trotz will play Chara on barzals wing before wahlstrom. Wtf do you have to lose you stubborn idiot, the season is over. He just doubles down on stupid. So done with his arrogance. He got lucky one year.
Quote:
I don't care how good a defensive coach trotz is his offense strat suck and is killing this team
Quote:
I sure am glad Trotz put Clutterbuck on Barzal's line instead of Wahlstrom for that top tier defense where they both puck watch on some guy getting his 3rd goal of the year.
Quote:
Maybe if they tried something OTHER than dump and chase the offense problem wouldn't be as pronounced. I swear it feels like I haven't seen an entry play by someone not named Barzal all season.

It’s draining having these empty net chaos plays and not scoring of them. Meanwhile other side they just glide around and puck watch and it’s easy for the flames.

Calgary is running circles around this team

This is like a cat toying with a mouse. Calgary know they have it under control and are skating circles around Isles.
Sad to see this team being seen as an easy kill.

Well that might be it for me tonight. It was hard to watch in the 1st but wow it got worse. Still hopeful but this is not going to be am easy one. Night all

Now I'm done for the night for real this time! No coverage in front of the net

It’s obvious which team came out and wanted to win. These guys had tons of heart last two years. Nothing now. Age, Covid, road trip to start the years, injuries, ancient Hickey philosophy all have contributed to this but the utter lack of effort and passion is the main reason. This team just doesn’t care

It makes me sad to see a team just having their way with Islanders.

They just don't care at the moment.
Quote:
Team looks like it’s given up and that’s concerning.
Quote:
Honestly I dont think this team even cares. We have seen that they CAN do it, as they have the past 3 seasons. Yes there have been a few personnel changes but nothing close to what would make a team go from a two time conference finalist to this garbage. You look at the body language and the hustle or lack thereof and I genuinely believe this group has given up. And quite frankly, people may think this is crazy, but it has to be getting close to Trotz being on the hot seat. People talk about how he gets a team to overachieve the past three years, well this team is now underachieving. You look around the league and there is no way teams like Columbus, Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim, LA, etc. have better teams on paper.
All I hear night after night are cliches and excuses from these guys.
Foregone Conclusions

I'm not gonna bother with the late game, I already know how it is going to go with the Islanders laying face down, ass up.

I bet it’ll be 2-0 Calgary before you could blink lol

I’ll watch the first and see how it goes. Will quit watching after three Johnny wrist shakes. We got one PP last night against the Isles. I’m guessing the Flamers will get 4 or 5. BP Boy is already texting Gary complaining about no PP’s in the warmup.

Of course Islanders MIA and mustering 11 shots in two periods. Christ. No wonder they're not going to make the playoffs.
Mangypane of course with his 24th goal and a 22% shooting percentage scoring on a ton of pass across wide open goals. Does NHL scouting even occur in relation to Calgary. Is there proof to other clubs that the Flames exist?
I mean watch the Mangypane goal. The Islanders basically conspire for him to score there. Two Islanders fail to cover him at all, one walks right by him to the guy with the puck, doesn't even think about covering Mangy or the passing lane, and the goalie moves out of the way so he can slot it into an open net. You would think this is a WWF scripted play in a scripted game. Its that bizarre.

I can’t watch Flames games. They’re boring as f***.

Flames get their 4th goal thanks to an official checking an Islander. lmfao
Islanders win the faceoff clean, puck is moved to the boards for an easy out, and instead the official is standing there with puck between his skates interfering with zone exit. Calgary regains puck, pressures for a minute, until they score on a review.
Cassie Campbell saying "Oh thats a goal, oh thats a goal" despite all the initial replays not being definitive. They finally show the goalcam, which is the first angle that shows the puck under glove. Cassie campbell says. oh thats the first time we've seen that angle, for sure its a goal.
Get her off the air. She would say its a Calgary goal every freaking time.
But the ISLEs level of dig and effort in this game is non existent. Just waiting to lose adn get on a plane.

Ok those Oilers comments are brilliant- the Cassie one particularly- I realize she faces a lot of criticism from all sides, but here the objection appears to be that she recognized what was actually a fairly clear goal as being a goal?

This new excuse subplot is entertaining.
The apparent "Wideman-Effect Compensation" conspiracy.
