I think Garth Snow retired and became GM the next day, no? Or am I misremembering this.

He did retire and become GM, but he had only just finished a one year $750K contract. Anyway, if they make Lucic a GM to avoid a year of salary, they have bigger issues.

He also grew up a Flames fan. He would definitely come here.

I've been a fan of the Eberle idea for years...
i think he's a good, reasonably low acquisition if guys like Toffoli are too expensive...Two solid playoffs years under Trotz makes me think he's a good candidate that could help Calgary in the playoffs

I wish it was true but not much evidence to support those beliefs. His shooting percentage has been declining for the past three years. This year he's at 8.2%, down from a career shooting percentage of 14.2%. From what I can see, his low goal total is not from a lack of high danger chances.
Still agree he and thd team would benefit from him having higher-skilled lineages though.

Can we do this sooner rather than later?

Don't mind Eberle although he's been been in a pretty big slump lately. Last night's gwg was his first goal since Dec. 6. He has 13 g and 14 a in 46 games.

If we could add a couple guys that would really shore things up.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Coleman-Backlund-Eberle
Mangiapane-Monahan-Toffoli
Lucic-Ruzicka-Dube

And how do you make those deals happen? Assets? Cap?

It will make more sense from a cap perspective to do it later. The closer to the deadline the more cap space the Flames can bank and the bigger fish/contract they can acquire. This goes for all teams, so I suspect we will still have some time yet before we start seeing some activity.
Once we get to a couple weeks from the TDL, I think that is when things will start to happen.

True, but I always think the earlier it can happen the better. New guys need some time.

Eberle has 2 years left? Ok yea I guess I take it back lol
I thought he was UFA for some reason and half his salary could have been retained.
Maybe this is more realistic?:
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Coleman-Backlund-Jarnkrok
Mangiapane-Monahan-Toffoli
Lucic-Ruzicka-Dube
Add another Swede on a cheap UFA contract and a rumoured target in Toffoli.
Both RHS!

Also, the other teams have to be willing to make the deal early and they really don't have the incentive to do so since they're likely to get a better return if they can get 2 or more teams in a bidding war near the deadline. There's also the issue of salary retention, where the later a trade is made, the less actual cash a team needs to pay to the player in a salary retention deal (although, that's less-likely if the player has multiple years left on his contract).

I don't see Eberle as a great fit unless you are thinking one of Gaudreau or Tkachuck is certainly gone next year. He's better defensively than he once was, but the idea of a Backlund, Coleman, Mangiapane line is to be your matchup line that punches above it's weight class against high end competition. I don't think Eberle is a guy who would do well in that role. Playing with Monahan, I don't know if he's suited to that either, and at 5.5 that makes a pretty big ticket to be playing that place in the lineup. Getting Monahan a couple of better line mates isn't out of the question but I don't know how much the Flames will be willing to spend to add. They'll be wiling to spend to add one player I expect, but two guys to play in the top 9 with Dube likely heading out to get one of them might be a touch too costly.

Eberle eats at a restaurant near my house apparently, in the off-season. Not particularly useful or interesting, just thought I would throw it out there…

If Eberle were a UFA, I would at least entertain the idea
But two more seasons at $5.5M? Not possible. And not a good idea at all.

Does he eat vegetables? Perhaps he can be a nutrition mentor for Gaudreau.
Oddly enough...with how Gaudreau is playing this year, we don't see these Johnny needs to eat vegetable threads anymore.

yeah, I thought he was a UFA after this season, so was only thinking about it in terms of him being a rental (and being possibly cheaper than Toffoil to acquire)
Like the player, but not at 5.5 for another year.

Agreed, just too rich.
Toffoli at 4.25 makes a lot more sense if you're going the hockey trade route (not UFA).

It's more likely Lucic gets traded to Seattle than retires. Seattle is very close to his home. With about $850k in actual salary owing - after Edmonton's retention - Lucic could look like a good option for a non cap team.
