Scheifele at basically the Monahan cap hit for 2 more years after this is a tantalizing thought.

I still like Sam Bennett. Glad he is doing well with another team.

We played him with junk linemates for years. He was not a bottom six forward but we used him as one. Did he get a fair chance in Calgary?

Well Monahan was the top center and Backlund was number two. So we made him a winger. Then we signed Troy Brouwer, and James Neal. The coaches played these scrubs over Bennett. Then Steve Chiasson.

Did we mishandle Bennett?

James Neal, Troy Brouwer, and Steve Chiasson had way more opportunity than Bennett ever had.

Did we mishandle Sam Bennett? Look at the three players listed above.

Yes we screwed that up.
Lanny will never admit he was wrong about Bennett. The guy could going to win a Hart trophy and he would say it was because his numbers were inflated because of someone else or he wished upon a star, or some other lame excuse.

Because their main talent scout is Craig Button.

It would be a huge + if you are including Monny.

As a rental he would be worth a 1st plus. With term he’s likely worth a1st plus two of Calgary best prospects. If they have to take Monny too, the cost likely goes up.

Pretty much every team would want to bid on this one.

I don't know about Scheifele. His GF% and xGF% have not been very good this season, and among the lowest on the Jets in both categories.

Tampa has won two years in a row with Point and Cirelli down the middle. However, they were flanked by Stamkos, Kurcherov, Killorn and Palat. Then they had some ridiculous depth on their bottom 2 lines with Johnson, Gourde and Coleman. Add in Hedman and Vasilevskiy to that mix and you can see why they were so good.

We just don't have that depth and talent in general. I don't think Tre can get us medium/long term solutions for both a #2C (he's been looking for like 4/5 seasons) and a #2RW this year, but Toffolli is a step in the right direction given his age, output and contract if that's the direction we go in. That doesn't mean he shouldn't and isn't still looking for another center, but it seems like that's just not available right now.

The lowest common denominator I've found among cap era cup winners is:

3 *elite* players in some combination at C/D/G, and a 4th who is at least borderline *elite*

**elite = Could/would play for Team Canada (regardless of nationality) on their own merit (not Kunitz or Muzzin who are there as linemates/D-partners). Obviously this is all subjective, but I think it offers a good cutoff for each position (more wiggle room to goalie which doesn't need to be quite as 'elite').

Markstrom would definitely make TC

Lindholm - He's not exactly a shoo-in, but I think he is better than borderline

Hanifin/Tanev would both be borderline at best (which isn't a knock)

Obviously there is a lot more to it beyond this, but it's a good initial litmus test. IMO we are at least 1 *elite* piece away at these key positions, but we're closer than we've been in a looong time (pretty much just Gio passing this test with peak Monahan being borderline).

Is there a bunch of B and C grade players elevating there level of play up as well?

...enter Darryl Sutter.

I mean, if you think he can be fixed with a change of scenery, you try to move heaven and earth to get him. But if it's something like injuries taking their toll (like Monahan) or some sort of off ice issue (like too much partying or something) then you probably steer clear of him.

I have no doubts in my mind that if Schiefele came here Sutter would turn him elite.

Definitely. And that may trickle down from your elite guys to some extent. Like I said, lots of other things matter, but I'm looking for the commonalities among all cup winners.

Goalies starting fewer than 60 games is another one (IIRC Quick was an exception one year). It may not even have as much to do with goalies being rested as a sign that a team is good enough that it doesn't need to ride their starter so hard.

A backhanded part of my point would be that wingers may not even enter the equation until step 2, no matter how good they are.

I think Lindholm is closer than many might think. Cup winning centres are generally really good two way guys - ROR, Kopitar, Bergeron - as opposed to more pure offensive guys (McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews). Even Point is pretty steady in his own end. Lindholm is great at two way play. Crosby was obviously an immense offensive talent but he was generational.

Defencemen - obviously Hedman was. But I’d argue Pietrangelo is a level below elite. And is Carlson elite? I mean, he’s had stellar years, but not consistently elite (same as Holtby in goal on that team).

Goal - you need elite or you need hot (eg Binnington).

There's always that chicken/egg thing for guys to enter the 'pantheon'. Before this year I don't think I'd have had Lindholm in the conversation with the ROR/Couturier/Scheifele/etc, but he certainly is...

We can all parse our definitions of elite, but Pietrangelo certainly passed my bar by making the 2014 Oly team.

Carlson - I do prefer all-around D, but his jump to 68 pt season coincided with their cup. 68, 70, and then 75(in 69gp) pt seasons without being a disaster in his own end = elite.

Goaltending needs to be competent and confident...it can be hard to be certain that you do have that, but it's pretty obvious when you don't!

If Scheifele is available, you go and get him. Excluding this season, he was a PPG center for 6 straight seasons ('16-'21). If we acquired him for Monahan + Zary + 1st + something else I think we have a good shot of doing some damage with him, Lindholm, and Backlund as our 3 center duo.

Those that are wanting defense out of him, I can understand that. But, I think with Lindholm and Backlund here Scheifele can get the bulk of the offensive zone starts and work his magic. I think he'd be a great grab if possible.

I will admit that I think the Sutter love around here is hilarious. The guy was the worst GM in Flames history buy a ton... Having said that I will admit that I thought hiring a dinosaur coach was right down Flames lane..it is how the Flames roll...they are the blue box of the NHL, the Flames recycle. BUT I will eat those words...without a doubt the old dog can learn new tricks and this Sutter has learned that there is more to hockey than defense first, dump and chase and thank you Kiprusoff.

What does this have to do with Trade speculation and rumors?

Had to double check that I hadn't clicked into the random keyboard diarrhea thread by accident.
