I take anything they crank out with a grain of salt. They've been saying an invasion is 'imminent' since last October. And Spring 2021 before that. Not long ago, Zelenskey said they had no indication of an imminent attack and told the USA to calm down. Then Psaki changed the tune and said an attack wasn't imminent but likely. And then the other day they said an attack was unlikely. Now, they've ratcheted it back up to DefCon 1. Next week! Oh boy.

Now, what we can kind of look at as a gauge of things to come is the actual situation on the ground vis the OSCE reporting of cease-fire violations, which increased dramatically today (738 in the past 24 hours).

Granted, a lot of these incidents involve small arms and machineguns but if you read the document, you will see things like the OSCE monitors observed the Donbass rebels with tanks and artillery outside of their cantonment areas. They were conducting training but you can more accurately call it readiness validation. If the OSCE actually reports that artillery is digging in within the withdrawal lines, then you can reasonably expect something's going to happen imminently.

The rebels are quite convinced Ukraine will launch an attack first. I suspect that's not really what Ukraine wants to do, but USA is whispering in their ear to go, go, go. Russia is loudly yelling in their ear Nyet, nyet, nyet.

Yeah the Backfire M3 is nuclear capable, but pretty much all bombers are at this point.



Its a combination of standoff bomber that can launch the Russian's newer hypersonic cruise missiles which can be conventional or nuclear. It can launch guided munitions. But I doubt very much that the Russians have moved any of their nuclear munitions anywhere near the airfields that these bombers are.



From a ground support perspective, the Backfire isn't really designed for that. Its a strategic platform that can carryout a tactical role though.


It's also a very effective maritime strike craft, it can come in at high speed launch its KG-22 anti-ship missile from a thousand miles away, then burner out at high speed.


However its an older bird, its been around for about 50 years, its not all that stealthy preferring speed over sneakiness.

Ok, yeah, it is silly to say that is the reason they would delay. A big decision like that wouldn't rest on something relatively inconsequential. I think the "source" is probably from someone who doesn't want the U.S.A. to send weapons.

Germany did say that this was a concern though and why they are against sending a lot of weapons to Ukraine. The know that if Russia does invade, most of the weapons will just fall into Russian hands. Same thing if Russia just succeeds in overthrowing the Ukraine government.
