I like that idea.

Trade something for him, entices his brother to sign with the Flames for one last run after the Oly's.....profit.

Only problem ... Staal has a full NMC in Detroit and probably wouldn't crack the Flames' top-six on D.

I’d take Eric Staal on this team for the stretch if he shows he’s still got some jam at the Olympics.

Simply offering him a job oughta be enough. No need to acquire Marc Staal

Really want Toffoli+Jarnkrok but wouldn’t say no to Toffoli+Eric Staal!

Seravalli speculates that the Sabres might trade Viktor Olofsson before the deadline. Left-shooting winger that can play RW. Good skater, good shooter.

In 2011 and 2014.

As mentioned, it's a cycle thing. TBL bled futures to push themselves over the top before all of their best players needed UFA deals.

If the bolded is true I'd be a bit worried that none of the contenders saw him as an enticing acquisition.

I thought Staal was looking to play in the States this year because last year was tough on his family after he moved to Montreal?

A guy like Eric Staal is only taking a job that he wants, which means more money than a PTO type usually gets or a unique opportunity in a place he likes. The dude has a ring, a gold medal, he’s 37. Not all older players are keen on putting the body out there without real incentive.

I suspect Staal had one year offers at low salary that he rejected.

If they are open to it the Canes make the most sense for Staal in my opinion. End his career where it all began with his brother on one of the best teams in the league

Either Mangiapane - Monahan or Lucic - Monahan (to retain Backlund/Mangiapane/Coleman) would be a nice line. Olofsson is also very good on the power play.

He’s a guy who would relish a change, after playing for Buffalo the last few years. I know he played a bit on Eichel’s line, but other than that, I don’t think he’s had the opportunity to show what kind of player he is.

If we traded Dube + pick for Toffoli the flames could still offer Staal a Kane type contract but with only 40 percent of the season left it would work out to those low salary offers you eluded to that I agree he most likely rejected. Really it would come down to desire to win at this point if Staal decides to take one more shot. If the Flames keep trending upwards though no questions Staal would be a good fit for 3rd line Center.

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Monahan - Staal - Toffoli
Lucic - Ruzicka - Lewis
Richardson, Ritchie

Hanafin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Gudbranson - Zadorov

Markstrom
Vladar

Drool worthy lineup that’s primed for a run, personally still would rather Jarnkrok over Staal as well but no doubt the Flames will have lots of options to improve up front.

But Seattle didn't even have a roster or farm team at the time. Other teams had their own players that they needed room for and had already invested in. Kylington was exactly what an expansion team should have been interested in.

The COVID situation reduced the mobility of players between the AHL and NHL last season which was a big part of him not getting into a lot of games last season, but the season before, you could see that he was close to becoming an NHLer. I think too many people under estimated him.

I wasn't shocked that they picked Gio, but thought Kylington should have been the guy the whole time. I think Seattle was trying too hard to be the next Vegas without realizing that what Vegas did was extraordinary and expansion teams on the whole needed to be thinking 3 years into the future.

Would be such a neat story if they won the cup too.

Win the cup as a second year player at 20 years old.

Win another cup in Carolina in your ~19th season at 37 years old

Yeah, I don’t see Staal being a possibility for us as a free agent. I would love having him in the lineup, though. If we are looking for veteran forwards, I’d see Getzlaf (if Anaheim falls off), Pavelski (if Stars fall off), or Kessel being more likely

I’d love to have Giroux, but not sure how keen he’d be to come to Calgary.

Gio was the right choice.

Kylington makes sense with the benefit of hindsight but recall this was also a guy that cleared waivers last year.

Gio probably will be able to recoup them a 1st at the deadline, and that was the right move for them.

If we had met the Seattle price to stay away from Gio and take Kylington instead......jeebus.

I really just feel the Toffoli to Calgary thing. He'd be a bit cheaper than some of the other options out there, and there's just too many obvious connections between TT and the Flames to ignore. It makes way too much sense.
