You have to wonder what kind of free agents they'll be able to attract playing in front of 3,000 people for a minimum of three seasons?
With the roster that will be in place the next 3 years.. I don't think the facility really matters. The Yotes aren't going to be attracting free agents.
Internally to Arizona Hockey, this is a massively positive move for the team to gain a major backer in ASU who hold a ton of weight in the City of Tempe - they practically are Tempe itself. This was the smartest move and a blessing in disguise that Glendale didn't want them anymore.

I really do believe the team can make this a unique and special arrangement short and long term with ASU/Tempe - truly a perfect scenario while obviously being very imperfect and not ideal but this was the best choice for the team.
All of the lease and costs will be paid by the Coyotes up front, and sorry Canada.. Alex Meruelo isn't hard up for cash

With the complete gong show that has been this franchise for a long time, I believe they're well into having to prove that this will be a good move, because all of their other good/franchise saving methods have been terrible.
So when you insist it's a good deal for the Coyotes and for hockey, no one else is willing to believe it. Boy who cried wold, and all that, only in reverse.

Call me naive if you want, but playing in an arena that is smaller than most junior and many college buildings is an embarrassment for the team and league. If this was even a possibility, why wasn't it explored earlier when the building might have been planned to be at least be north of 10k seats and a true shared partnership could be formed? Glendale has most recently been on the rocks for at least 2-3 years now (if not longer) so time shouldn't have been a factor here.
This is desperation at its finest and one of Bettman's continually worst maneuvers to continue to defend this sad market when it could be in many other cities and quite possibly at least getting itself out of the negative as a constant drain on league revenues.
As a player it would have already been a tough sell, but now, there's no way in hell I'm touching that franchise with a ten foot poll.

How big a deal are ASU Athletics really? I don't live there, but have been a to a couple of ASU football games against big name opponents and the crowd was sparse, far less than announced attendance.

I visit Phoenix often and near everyone has Sun Devils merch. It's more numerous then Pro League merch and there was a college football game in town when I went last and it was a huge deal.

I think the true answer is a lot of teams just don't plan ahead. Another example is Barclays Center where the Islanders were offered to be tenants early in construction (at a time where the bowl could have been built to accommodate hockey) but said no. Then they changed their minds but at that point, it was a basketball bowl and you had to shove one side of the rink under the stands at one end. Eventually they got their new arena but it was an embarrassing handful of years for the team and league before that.
The league is fortunate that the PA is in a leadership at the moment, though I suspect the PA are simply keeping their concerns out of the public for now.
Marchand is going to have plenty of time on his hands to tweet this week, though.
For the upcoming 2022 City Council Candidate Elections, three seats are opening with terms of office beginning in July 2022. The Primary Election will be held March 8, 2022 and the General Election, if needed, will be held May 17, 2022.

Strictly based on capacity, The Coyotes will be raking in roughly a quarter, or a third if everything goes well, of the HRR that pretty much every other NHL team will be making.
How will this not be reflected in how much they pay players? Will they be a cap basement team for the next 5 years?
