I think 6 mill is cap retention, total, is worth a mid to late 1st. At least.

Just based on prices we've seen for when teams take on pure cap. Carolina took on the $6.25 million cap hit of Patrick Marleau in exchange for a 1st round pick (13th overall) in the 2020 NHL entry draft.

But here, it would only be about 2.5 seasons.
I don't think you're that far off, but it does seem like a steep price.

Dube and a 2nd for Toffoli. Anything more than that, walk away.

The sound of Toffoli coming to the Flames is mouth watering! Tre should've picked him up as a free agent 2 summers ago.

Steinberg poured more gas on this yesterday

He said the Flames were after Toffoli when the Kings traded him to the Canucks and they were also after him when he signed with the Habs. Flames have been targeting him for 2+ years

I know people are down on Dube but I think it’s a mistake trading him away.
Long term he’s the better player, I’d much rather give something else up.

I understand that, but we need to starting looking at “now” as well. With how this team is performing an added boost from Tofoli could potentially give this team a significant boost in depth and scoring.

Age does not equate better in the future.

Dube has a career .329
Toffoli has a career .604

Backlund, Dube, 2022 1st, and a prospect like Francis for Toffoli and Dvorak.

Gaudreau/Lindholm/Tkachuk
Mangiapane/Monahan/Toffoli
Lucic/Dvorak/Coleman
Ritchie/Ruzicka/Lewis
This aged well since you posted it yesterday.

Backlund has lost a step defensively? The guy plays on the #1 PK in the league, has 30 takeaways (Ranks him 17th in the NHL among centers), starts in the defensive zone more than any other player on the Flames with 21.3%.

That total buzzkill on offense just had a 4 point night with a goal and 3 primary assists. He has more than double the even strength points that Sean Monahan has this season.

In no world is trading Mikael Backlund over Sean Monahan ideal.

Was Panarin to Calgary ever legit? I thought he was only ever considering a handful of prime U.S. destinations (LA, New York, Florida, etc).

Dube ($2.3M) + Valimaki ($1.55M, $425K bury penalty) for Toffoli ($4.25M) and a 4th. Flames take on $1.525 with Valimaki in the minors, which is below the amount they have to play with. Move out Dube and replace him with Pelletier.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Coleman-Monahan-Toffoli
Pelletier-Backlund-Mangiapane
Lucic-Ruzickia-Lewis

Profit.
Pelletier-

Not so sure he's the better player long term either, but regardless the nicest part of including Dube on the deal with the 2.3mil you save moving him out. That's going to be critical if you want to add Toffoli and re-sign Tkachuk and Gaudreau

I would try to keep Dubes too. But, Pelletier might fit on that wing with Monahan-Toffoli pretty nice...

Apparently coming out of the KHL the finalists were Calgary and Chicago.

We absolutely do not know if Pelletier is going to be better than Dube if he were called up tomorrow. In fact, almost definitely not. After being drafted they've had very similar trajectories. After ripping up juniors this was their D+2 AHL rookie seasons:
Dube: 37gp 39pts
Pelletier: 36gp 36pts (so far)

Dube's next 2 NHL seasons would of resulted in a 29pt and 35pt pace adjusted for the full year. He also played 25 NHL games in his D+2 year and put up a measly 5pts in 25gp. If you are expecting "profit" in the fact that Pelletier will just jump in and be able to produce at a materially higher pace than Dube's first two NHL seasons, you will be extremely disappointed.

I'm not against trading Dube if the right deal came up, but we need something else coming back to replace his current production.

I like it. If possible, before trading Dube, I'd like to see him with another center. Monahan (pre-injury) sucked the life out of Gaudreau. I'm suspicious he may be doing that to Dube. Although, even at his best, I don't think Dube is destined to be more than a 40 pt guy so I'm not losing sleep if he's a "key" piece in getting Toffoli.

I would be fine with the trade but would suspect the Flames add an NHL body/rental to play where you have Pelletier.
