He has already said that he would return to Philly as a UFA, if I remember correctly. His only criteria on a deadline trade would be to go to a contender. So, in his mind does Calgary qualify?

He played 145 out of a possible 151 games from 2018-COVID stoppage. 64G 160 pts.
He was on track for 93 pts in 80.8 games in 19-20.
Pretty sure the 36 games he missed in his 2nd and 3rd years were both ankle injuries. Obviously the neck injury is a different ball game, but I'm not sure it's even fair to consider him otherwise injury prone. He playing at the end of the season 5/6 years (ie. would have been available for playoffs)

Mike Johnson of TSN said he's been hearing Giroux to Colorado or "maybe Calgary"....

Oh man, Giroux to the Flames would be awesome. Here's to hoping we aren't the bridesmaid yet again. But history tells us, we will always be the bridesmaid. Dang it Colorado, dang it.
Can they even fit even a 50 percent retained Giroux on their roster?
Edit: Don't know how the Avs could fit Giroux in there. They have the same cap at the deadline as they do today at 1.6 which is less than half of what they'd need. On top of not having their 1st and 2nd round picks in the 22 draft either.
They'd have to move something significant from the roster to balance out the value.
Flames can make it work with futures at the deadline. And dumping some deadweight from the forwards.

Interestingly enough, in Claude Giroux's first 57 playoff games, he had 61 points. In his last 28 playoff games, he has 12 points. Those numbers are a reflection of the team, IMO. Obviously, he would be a huge help to this team.

Giroux is a perfect fit for our playoff run imo. He has unfinished business too, don't forget.
Mangiapane-monahan-giroux could be absolutely lethal

I don’t like the price it will take to get Giroux. 1st +,+ for a guy who will be here and gone after the deadline so anything less than an incredibly deep run it will be a lot of regret making that deal.

I don’t really like the idea of giving up a 1st + for a pure rental like giroux . If I was Tre I would be seeing how much the cost would be for konecy. He can score, lays some hits, has term, and is a s**t disturber .

It would be tons more for the very reasons you say. They have no particular reason to move him.

That's the very nature of deadline deals.
You can argue that anything short of the Cup makes the trade a failure.
But when teams are in contention, any move which increases you slim chance of winning the Cup (and let's face it, the odds are long for any team to win the Cup) is often considered worthwhile.
The odds are very good that it will result in regret. But, there is some slim chance it might just work out with a Cup win.

Wasn't sure who said it last week (Friedman? - I'll try to find it if its online) but apparently players from Colorado are already trying to recruit Giroux.
This is the only reference to that report that I can find at the moment. Vague but I think Friedman expanded on this but may have been on the Marek Show

7. During All-Star, expect Claude Giroux to sit down with his agent (Pat Brisson) to discuss his future. I think there are Avalanche players who’d love to have him. The question is if the organization decides that’s the move they need to make. The right-hand shot makes sense. But it won’t be easy for Colorado to fit. That means the possibility of a third team, which raises the asset cost. There’s still time for it to play out, and Giroux has control.

what exactly does this mean? its up to the GM to trade for him and surely they can't afford to sign him as a UFA next season

Means that if Giroux decides to move (he holds the cards) that his buddies in Colorado want him to choose the Avs.

I don't think so? Not when a player says he'd like to see you on his team.

Yes it would cost more but then you have him for x number of years . Philly gm last week mentioned some untouchables and konecy name was not mentioned. Granted he might have forgotten about him.

It’s why Iggy chose Pittsburgh. Not tampering.

Thankfully I cant see him choosing the Flames over the Avs.
Personally I'd rather not give up our 1st ++ for a UFA rental who likely won't resign here anyway. Also not really keen on giving up high draft picks this year given the uncertainty surrounding Johnny's future here and trying to chase a cup just because we can.
I don't buy the "show Johnny we want to win" mantra, we've done that the last 3-4 years and have nothing to show for it. If he's not going to talk contract at all until after the season is over Tre's backed himself into a really bad corner, and this deadline could sink the franchise even further by surrendering high picks and then losing Johnny for nothing.

Giroux would never be anything more than a deadline deal. His cap hit will be too high for Calgary to fit him in long term.
