Laughable. Gary Roberts returned and had a great career. This isn't old time hockey anymore. The game is soft in comparison.

Roberts came back and had a decent career, but his production was basically just over 50% from before. No one doubts Eichel will play. Will be be elite and worth what he’s paid (and the cost to get him) is a legit question. I think his mental state is also a legit question. Hockey players always talk about being nervous about re-injuring a repaired part.

In fact that list might be a very short one.
Colorado.
Would be great add for sure but really a longshot at best.

I wouldn’t mind Giroux on the Flames but the premise of this story is weird. Guy plays well in fun, lower-intensity game, so the team definitely should trade for him? OK.

Gary Roberts wasn't the first pro hockey player ever to have the surgery he had. And as others have pointed out, he was never the same player afterwards.

But he was still good. I would rather see Calgary overpay for that situation than sign all the 30 something players in the league and watch them ride off into retirement.

There was no cap in those days. The post-surgery Gary Roberts wasn't worth anywhere near the equivalent of $10 million against today's cap. Maybe Eichel will be, but he has to prove it.
And that still doesn't address the fact that Eichel is the first player ever to get this type of surgery, and there is absolutely zero clinical data on people returning from that surgery to play high-frequency, high-intensity contact sports. If he isn't at least nervous about it, he's an idiot.

Roberts was 31 the year he made his comeback. There are a lot of details being glossed over in his story. He had his surgery while a Flame and after a pretty successful comeback season, decided to retire because of the the pain and the fact his surgery wasn’t to his own satisfaction. His retirement involved a lot of therapy, to the point he decided to try again, but he still was nervous and that’s why he wanted a trade to a team with less travel. And in a few years he needed more surgery and missed half a season.
It’s not really the example Eichel fans would be looking for.

I'm not even sure Eichel was a 10M player before the injury

Yes, he was. Not to mention, you pay for the upside on a long term deal for a player of that age. Assuming he will peak at 25-29
He was 1.1 pt/gm as a 22/23 year old.

He has never been worth his contract.....yet.
Since coming into the league, 34 others players have a better ppg. 45 guys have outscored him.
Those are not 10M/yr numbers in any way, shape or form.
No, he was paid to not only be an upper echelon player but also the face of a franchise for at least a decade. Their captain and unquestioned leader.
Buffalo screwed that up however.
He may or may not reach that elite level in Vegas, only time will tell that.
But in his 4 seasons under the current deal...he has not come close to living up to it.
Now you add on a major surgery with unknowns all around it plus what you gave up plus another 50M guaranteed....... and there is a huge risk associated with him.

I’m not even in love with Eichel but this is terrible arguing. Using “since they entered the league” as a threshold for can the guy score points? Rookies don’t score like vets.
And on whether or not he’s worth $10 mil a year. Last three years prior to this one, leaguewide, Eichel is 22nd in all situations points/60. Of the 22 people above him, not a single one will be making less than $9 mil once their current deal expires. And he was doing this on Buffalo, where hockey goes to die. Tkachuk is less productive than him and it’s probably a 50/50 chance that he’ll make less than $10 mil next year.
A guy who can lead your team in scoring is worth $10 mil. It’s not 2006.

Huh...wasnt aware that only 3 certain seasons and a single points/60 statistic was how value of contracts are determined.
My mistake.

Ya, if we're talking about his contract, why not use numbers relative to that?
In the time he was paid $10M he is 17th in ppg. Which maybe doesn't sound that great, but:
McDavid
Draisaitl
Kucherov
MacKinnon
Marchand
Panarin
Kane
Pastrnak
Crosby
Marner
Rantanen
Matthews
Huberdeau
Stamkos
Malkin
Barkov
Eichel
Everyone except the bolded has a teammate among those top 17.
2/3 years for Panarin have been with Zibanejad (20th). Toews is 32nd.
I'm still scrolling to find a Sabre...this may take a while.
61st on the list Taylor Hall played 37 games as a Sabre (pretty sure I passed a ton of other teammates for the above on the way). Sam Reinhart 72nd.

82 point career high
Being injured and having a higher ppg isn't exactly a good thing IMO
I like my 10M players to have 100 points

The thing about Giroux is that he is likely a pure rental. I think that the Flames will have to be really cagey about what they send for him. Game changing player though. He would transform a line with Monahan and Mangiapane.
The only way that I would be happy about a trade would be to expand it so that a player or two coming to Calgary have the potential to be here for longer than this one year. I'd also want to send back to Philly player that they are familiar with and still value, in Tyler Pitlick. Philly also isn't afraid to try out younger players and would be a good landing spot for Matthew Phillips.
Would love to see :
Valimaki, Phillips, Pitlick, 2022 1st
for
Giroux (2M retained to fit into cap at the deadline)
Allison and 2022 3rd (heart on your sleeve middle six RW)
or
Frost (rough couple of years, maybe Philly has soured on him)

Full NMC....would he waive for Calgary? Highly doubtful.
