Looks like he steps on the stick on the ice while bending over and slips forward.

Didn't Darryl once trade his own son?

I'm not even sure he likes him

This is a non issue.

Think there was some issue, like missing practice, and he was traded right after.
Ok bit more to it, like a bar room blitz.

Off topic, but those Stockton jerseys are rad!! What’s with that colour scheme? Love it!

That's getting overturned for sure.

No way that's worth three games.

Terrible description. The ref separated the players. As JV was going to pick up his stick he pushed the ref so he could get at his stick. Zero tolerance means zero tolerance. It was a nothing burger but you simply do not put your hands on an official. Full Stop. It would be bedlam if they let that happen. He is lucky it is only three and will be 20 if there is a next time. A dumb move. I like the guy and think he has a lot of potential but he needs to learn what is required to be successful and it seems he is not learning that lesson.

I think it’s automatic.

Is there any sort of precedent for such a ruling being overturned? If there isn’t, I think Valimaki is stuck with his 3 game suspension.

This is a little dramatic

Hard to say. I sat in the Match Penalty committee when I was still reffing. All of those types of penalties are reviewed. After seeing that video, that doesn't meet the threshold for abuse of officials. We would have overturned that without much discussion.

They were wearing throwback Stockton Thunder jerseys, which was the ECHL team that played in Stockton before the Flames moved the Heat there.

Yep. That was a one-off event. Minor league teams do a lot of those.

The rules are clear, and are zero tolerance for a reason (correctly). So no problem with the call at all - totally correct.

the good news is this is a nothing burger. is push of the official was marginal, and shouldn't generate any concern, nor any potential backlash or reputation from the officials.

Automatic call, serve it, and move on.

Not sure why the ref was standing so close to Valamaki after it was clear everything was done. You don't see refs do that, normally they tend to be further back. Looks like the ref was 100 percent looking to escalate things.

Zero tolerance except for all the times they tolerate it. Linesmen take more abuse than that several times a game.

It was a weird scrum from start to finish. JV should be smarter, but I'm not sure his actions were particularly unusual.

All that said, leagues should actually be better about enforcing zero tolerance of abuse against all of their officials, not just the orange arm bands.

That's kind of how it looked to me too. Seems like a ref on a power trip, although perhaps other issues arose during the game. There must be a way to appeal the suspension.

Watch it again. He pushes the ref away so he can get his stick. It wasn’t a major hit or anything, but it sure isn’t the incidental contact you’re describing.

It was a ref (orange arm bands) and not a lineman who was with Valamaki, so already it was an unusual scrum breakup. With the two opponents by him that were likely continuing the trash taking, the ref positioned himself between Valimaki and the second opponent, as a physical barrier, and was likely talking to Valimaki to distract and de-escalate the situation. Obviously with how Valimaki responded, he was much more worked up than otherwise appeared, and that tiny shove by the ref to Valimaki’s shoulder inflamed him even further. Not a good situation the whole way around.
