Re: Euphoria. I have a huge issue with shows that depict teenagers having sex as though they were adults. The camera should not be leering at these characters - I don’t care that the actors are all over 18, the characters aren’t, and aggressively sexualizing them is exploitative.

Especially when a big part of your show’s message is “look how awful and exploitative the world is to young girls” - kinda undermines that when you turn around and do the exact same thing to them.

Spoilers, but one character savagely beats the crap out of another, and they have the good taste to shoot that in a manner where your imagination does most of the violence. But less than 15 minutes later, that same character is in bed with his girlfriend, and her nipples can be seen from space.

It’s unnecessary. Nudity, in general, is far less necessary to most plots and stories than their creators would have you believe.

That’s just me though.

My wife wanted to watch the new Gossip Girl show and it does the exact same thing, made both of us feel really uncomfortable.

Doesn't seem like it has gotten much attention, but Station Eleven is the best show I have watched in quite a while.

I really enjoyed Friday Night lights, but the way it portrayed teenage sex and drinking did bother me in the same way.

It's not that I don't know these are real things and I have no issue with entertainment reflecting real life, but I got the feeling the writers wanted the best of both worlds. Young attractive adults but a plot that calls them teenagers.

The content of TV and movies set in high school would be a lot different if producers had to cast 15-17 year old actors.

Oh I get that. But some films and shows address these things honestly, reflecting reality and also the problems it can cause.

While others address it exactly as if they are college students vs. teenagers.

You can have teenage characters drinking and partying and having sex without it being gross and creepy.

That 70s Show did it for nearly ten years - aside from the occasional shot of a girl in her underwear, it was pretty tame, visually. Nobody thought the show was missing something because they never got to see what Jackie and Kelso were doing to make the van rock.

Some might argue “well, that’s a sitcom”. Okay.

Breaking Bad. There’s sex in that show (not a ton) and when it is depicted, it actually does have something to do with storytelling and character growth. There’s still no moment when the camera leers at Krysten Ritter for 45 seconds like she’s washing Michael Bay’s Ferrari.

A kiss, a look, a touch, a line, and a cut to characters in the aftermath all do more to get the point across than nudity.

And all that said, I appreciate that HBO is grown up entertainment. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be nudity in film and television, but I would appreciate if the filmmakers are honest about why it’s there, because it’s not there because it’s “essential to the story” - you just wanted that girl to take her clothes off.

I just watch Dickenson on AppleTV. it was an interesting piece, not that funny for being billed as a comedy, but I enjoyed a lot.

I'm a sucker for when shows take the time to confront historisity head on, you just the sense of a very very big world small world, when they give you characters that don't need to be fleshed out, because all of that background material about them exists in encyclopedias.

They also do a good job of making 160 years ago feel very contemporary.

I think its pretty clear that Euphoria is geared towards adults.

My GF watches it and i have caught a few episodes. It's a pretty fantastical (dare i say, absurd?) portrayal of teen life. not for me

Which kinda makes it a show where adults can watch teenage characters having sex.

Which is distasteful to say the least.

Anyone watch the Legend of Vox Machina? I knew nothing about the series, and it just kind of popped up my Amazon Prime, so decided to give it a try. Must say, the first 3 eps so far have been very good. Kind of reminds me a bit of Invincible in a medieval setting.

I assume adults are aware they are watching adult actors portraying teenagers? Most adults had sex in their teen years and maybe it brings back good memories? I haven't seen the show so I can't say if it's something that floats my boat or not.

I haven't watched much of Euphoria, but from what I've seen, I don't think anyone is watching it for the good memories. Every bit I've seen of it seems bleak as hell.

Thats actually pretty funny.

"Lets watch a show called 'Euphoria' that seems like it might be a nice, light pick-me-up!"
