It happens. Bennett was a fantastic junior player and flashed with the Flames under Hartley. Unfortunately Treliving's first major mistake (the Gulutzan hire) not only set the Flames back but altered Bennett's trajectory. It's possible that Darryl may have been able to get him back on track but a change of scenery was likely the only way for him to be the player he was supposed to be as a Flame. I'm just glad it happened on a team in the eastern conference.

Even Gulutzan could have made it work if we don't sign Brouwer to be Bennett's veteran. Heck imagine if we were the team Lucic signed with back then:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Lucic circa 2017 - Bennett - Versteeg
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik

Gulutzan was all about square pegs in round holes. Nothing he did worked.

Sam plays aggressive, he thrives on it, he builds confidence playing that way. Sure, he’ll take the odd penalty, maybe incur the odd suspension, or injury, but that’s the price for playing the way he does, and that’s the Sam Bennett I always hoped to see here. But coaches like Ward in particular would punish Bennett for playing that way if it led to the odd penalty, cutting his ice time, slotting him lower in the lineup or benching him. That ruined both his game and confidence. I see this as a massive failure by Flames coaching and by extension management.

Was that the knock on him in years 2 and 3?

Bennett's deployment on the team? not great.

Could he have done more himself? for sure.

But as for how this team went about developing him? (no time in the AHL, primo lineup spot at the start, etc). HUGE whiff by management and coaches.

Is he worth more than essentially two 2nd rounders or worth more than protecting Dube? I want to hurl.

The don't mess up everything, but they certainly mess up a lot more than they ever get right.

Nah, just the reality....there is a reason the boosters will always use per game stats. 45-55 points doesn't sound as good but that's where he ends up IMO. Exactly what I predicted before the season.

It's actually a decent amount, not like I was being a hater

^ lol

Goalposts are on shallow pegs for a reason.

Mario’s 45 points in 90-91 were probably an “I told you so” too here

Shaking my head over here

saying the exact thing I said at the start of the season is NOT moving the goalposts. Sam has 28 points right now, its pretty good but not the MVP some of you make it out to be. They have also played what 25 home games? Pretty certain my preseason prediction will be spot on. Sam will have 45-55 points while missing games due to injury was exactly my call.

He could have one of those annoyingly good nights right now though, freaking Sharks are winning

He's producing at .82 PPG.

But yeah, if you squint hard enough, all predictions look close.

This is ongoing feeling for me. But I’m happy for him. He was a bust here. We got something for him. So let him light it up there.

Goals and game winners don’t count as much when you miss some games due to injury. Or something like that.

The Cy Young stat line is a little curious though. We’ll see what happens with that.

Bennett is PPG for the Panthers. That's hard to keep up for anyone, he's been nothing short of great for the Panthers. And it isn't even his main contribution IMO.

I think it's perfectly fair for fans to ask the question of what was it about the Flames that prevented him from being the player here that he is there. And how does this team prevent another situation like that from happening again.

It's absurd to be continually discounting Bennett at this point, but yet two posters will keep trying to their grave.
