Was gonna say, he’s found a niche. He would have been worth about a second or third the way he plays now.

Too bad he didn't figure it out right away

I was saying what they should do not necessarily what I think they will do.

That being said he would have done the Stone deal but Stone wouldn't sign here IMO. Maybe a guy with another year makes sense...worst case you flip them next season.

I think giroux would be the ideal pick up.

Given where valimaki is at, would folks be more comfortable in valimaki being the primary asset going back for giroux rather than a 1st round pick?

I'm fine with a 1st.

If the Flames trade Valimaki it'd likely be aimed at a similar player just at forward. Or they plan on keeping him and replacing Zadorov next year.

I think for Giroux any conversation starts with an unconditional 1st.

Valimaki.... I'd try to flip him in a package for Kravtsov. They are dangling him for Chychrun so maybe it doesn't work out and they still need a suitor for him with a young defenceman coming back.

There is just no room for him right now. Maybe Zadorov walks in the offseason but even then he's still stuck behind Hanifin and Kylington on that left side.

I'm leery of trading Valimaki, just because they will have a tough time re-signing Zadorov due to cap constraints, and will need a cheap replacement for him.

And putting all your eggs in the Mackey basket is a pretty big risk. I want Valimaki and Mackey to both be here, fighting for that job.

What defensive depth is in the pipeline after Valimaki? I don't think he's trending into a top pairing defender but I don't think he's a piece you move for a rental.

Nope

If the Flames are really going big game hunting (or as big as they can afford I suppose) the 1st + Valimaki would probably be in play

This isn't 2018 where they still figured they had a diamond.

If management wants to push their chips in this year, I’m okay with Valimaki + 2nd for Giroux. But if he is available, someone will offer at least a late 1st.

IMO, Valimaki + 2nd is a better return than a late 1st.

I think the industry also matters. I am in IT consulting and one of my recent projects (2019) was with one of the largest companies in its industry in the world and headquartered in Montreal so I was living/working there for 8 months. Everyone spoke English there during work and in meetings. IT seems to be probably the one industry where French is not required.

I have a hypothetical question for you guys - If Vancouver asks for Mangiapane in return for J.T Miller would you consider it? Of course I would try to acquire the player for future assets first, but that's why it's a hypothetical scenario, and a tough decision.

First of all I think Mangiapane is great, and I don't think the Flames should be looking to trade him. I do think we have an interesting situation in the off season where we have to sign 3 of the top LWs in the game.

Both Mangiapane and Miller have a year of team control after this one. Mangipane is getting paid significantly less this year, but that might change next year. As far as production goes I think Miller averaged much higher PPG as far as his last few seasons, but Mangiapane seems to produce more chances at even strength. In that case it comes down to positional need, and Miller is a center.

What do you guys think? will such a trade make the Flames better or worse? Also what do you see the Flames doing when it comes to the cap crunch this summer? The Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane, and Kylington raises are not likely to be covered by Zadorov, Gudbranson, and Pitlick being replaced by league min guys.

Don’t like it. Flames need to add not make a lateral type move. Miller is better than Mangiapane today but is 4 years older and opens a hole. Millet ends up playing the wing after this deal as the flames are down one of their top 6 wingers.

If the Flames add Miller it needs to be more futures based.

All the talk on the radio this afternoon has been Monahan and the tale of 2 seasons and how much he has improved since the start of December. Maybe the need shifts back to a top 6 wing instead of a center? Cheaper and more options.

lol I'm not sure I'd want to move Mangiapane straight up, let alone add.

Let's look at 5v5 stats the last two seasons:

Goals: 25 vs 12 (Edge: Mangiapane)
Points: 39 vs 37 (Edge: Mangiapane)
xCF% Rel: 3.69 vs 0.63 (Edge: Mangiapane)
xGF% Rel: 0.39 vs 0.22 (Edge: Mangiapane)

So we are trading the better 5v5 goal scorer, point producer, and play driver, who is also younger and still has RFA status after this season...and you want us to add?

Have fun with that.
