Trucks are exempt, therefore SUV's are also excempt. So considering SUV's and trucks are then excempt this whole tax is pointless in my mind, as it almost encourages people to buy these bigger excempt vechiles.

SUVs are NOT exempt. Pickup trucks are exempt.

Anybody know of a place that I can look for more details on this? I've ordered a new car that was supposed to be at the dealership earlier this month. Due to the Rail Strike, its new date is supposed to be today or tomorrow, and I'm wondering how this will impact me. I'll be rather pissed if this just increased the price of the car, even though the fuel efficiency is somewhere around 10-11 L / 100 KM.

I think the budget has to pass thru the house first and that will not happen today or tommorrow. You should be ok.

Got a link to prove that? Im not bashing, Im just curious to. I was told by my political science prof that SUVs are excempt, but I haven't seen it in writing. SUV's have always been considered trucks in the past so it really wouldn't suprise me though.

Looks like I'm okay anyway. Using the 55/45 split with the manufacturer's specifications, I get a fuel efficiency of 9.57 L / 100 KM. There is a chart on that link above that will show that I'm not eligible for a rebate, but won't get the levy either. Not great, but not horrible either.

I'm guessing they are going to use the destinction that most SUVs are used as passenger vehicles.
I'll agree, it seems like a kind of strange distinction to make. Especially when the CRA already uses this chart for determining depreciation eleigibility/classes. But this levy is being applied at the dealerhip level, so most people aren't going to need figure it out; the dealership will tell you one way or the other.

I think the dealerships will follow a federal government mandate. They charge you for GST, this is along the same line.
There will probably be some government sanctioning body that have a list as to which vehicles need to be charge what amount.

I think the government collects the levy at the dealership delivery level. I'm sure the dealership will pass those costs onto the consumer...

My biggest reason for saying that was knowing the number of issues I've seen with people claiming their vehicles a business use on their tax return and then the CRA re-assessing and saying they were passenger vehicles. For years extended cab trucks over a certain dollar value had this issue. And since I work in a business that specializes in farm tax returns, there are many farmers purchasing large pickups that have historically run into these issues.
I'm wondering about things like a Ford Explorer (SUV) or a Ford Explorer Sport-Trac (which has a box). Even some Hummers I've seen have an exposed box. If a Sport-Trac is an SUV, how about pickups with 4 doors and a short-box, like some of the Nissan Frontier models? I don't know how they are going to draw the line?
I guess I'm just wondering about the specifics of it. It isn't a cut and dried as it sounds.

Why charge people more for bigger vehicles when they might actually need bigger vehicles for a reason and not out of luxory?
I'm not talking a housewife who wants to spend 50k of her husbands money on a nice escalade. I'm talking a family who go's camping...haul's a 7,000+ camper....6k+ boat perhaps?
I know trucks are exempt, but you can't really fit a family into a truck anyway.
Taxing people based on the size of there vehicles is ridiculous, they should just give far bigger and more appealing tax breaks to those tho buy smaller and more efficient vehicles.
I don't drive a big huge gas guzzler because I like to pay 120+ at the pump, I drive one because I need to.

So your already paying the price on your income tax. Do you need to to pay the price x2?
Minus the boat, there are a ton of families who chose to go camping and have a trailer, instead of paying the 5-10k or whatever it can add up to have a vacation else where such as a plane ticket/hotel to Hawaii etc.
Owning a camper doesn't mean your some chap with pockets overflowing with gold.
