I think Ovi gained extra motivation to keep in shape and keep his skill level up as he climbs up the goal scoring list. Knowing that you could potentially be the all-time leading goal scorer would be pretty big motivation for anyone. Either that or the man just loves hockey and wants to play forever like Jagr

I often compare what Lanny looked like at 35 and what Iggy looked like. It’s pretty striking.

Drinking from the Stanley Cup brought him youth and long life.

Would this be considered racist if he was an indigenous player?

If we can’t make a Russian drinking vodka joke anymore then the terrorists have won.

Ovie has reached the age where he now has old man strength and hasnt slowed down much, plus he's experienced as all heck. I dont think hes on steroids as he would would have had to of just started or be taking very small doses to not have it affecting his appearance and health. Steroids are dangerous for high cardio athletes.

is it because he plays the full 2 min on the pp and his whole life had backstom and kuznetsov feeding him? i'd like to see what he'd do if craig conroy was centering him. the cup he got was on the heels of the 3th and 4th lines being great, he definitely got some goals but i seem to remember the depth carrying that team in the playoffs. I mean, prior to that cup he did have a reputation as a choker in the playoffs...anyway i'll probably get flamed for this but I think he's a bit overrrated...give me Crosby over him any day

Patrick Marleau at age ~38ish was still one of the most physically impressive players in the league. He never had ovechkin's ceiling in his prime.

Marian Hossa at age ~36 was elite AF. his "injury" (which happened to co-incide with a significant drop in his salary...) hurt Jonathan Toews' career more than anything else.

Not as good as Crosby and overrated are very different things

Those 2 will easily be in the argument as 2 of the best 10 players in history.

Ovy would score 50 with me passing to him and I get tired in mens hockey if I have to back check

Don't worry Leon, no one's asking you to backcheck. No need to get pissy.

Mario Lemieux at 36 years old, scored 76 points in 43 games. At 38 he scored 91 points in 67 games.

Any player who gets compared to Lemieux is truly one for the ages.

Ovechkin as we know is 137 goals away from 894. Selanne from age 37 onward scored 144. If Ovie can match that, he's got it.

And outside of Selanne's first season, Ovechkin was a significantly better goal scorer than Selanne ever was.

I think you guys might really be underplaying the role of pure spite here.

If the top goal scorer in NHL history is a Russian? He is motivated.

Never underestimate the power of a spiteful, motivated Russian.

He has his Cup, now he wants a record. Dont know about you, but I wouldnt bet against him.

Of course we do. I'd rather see Ovechkin as the NHL's top goal scorer than Whine (Wine?) Gretzky.
