Apparently character is more important to the Flames than scoring talent

Why haven’t they done anything? Fire him or at least try and defend him. But as of now, he’s absolutely not making the right decision for this team.

Do what?
Given their overall record they aren’t going to fire him now.
And why would he need defending? Outside of cp there is little to no discussion about the Flames needing a new gm

I understand that they have had a relatively decent start to the season. But the inconsistency’s of this team are mind boggling. He hasn’t gotten this team any further and has made some poor decisions in the past.

He’s now told us two years in a row that he was gonna make some important decisions regarding the core players. Apart from losing the captain, he’s done nothing to the core. monahan isn’t even a shell of his former self, and we still need secondary scoring. But Treliving continues to bring in 30 year old players that barley make a dent.

Cole is making allllllot of money to do what?

Treliving is the kind of manager that will get us, Taylor Hall… when he’s 34, and maybe scores 7 goals in 82 games.

I understand all that, and that's a valid view. I'm just saying that if you are expecting anything to happen right now - including the GM being replaced or someone coming out to give BT a vote of confidence or explain why he is still the GM - it ain't happening.
Any decision re. BT happens in the off-season.

I think he is around for awhile yet. His team likely makes the playoffs this year. Next year, depending on the summer but if he re-signs Gaudreau, Mangiapane, Tkachuk and Kylington (which can be done) then next year’s team is largely the same. Maybe Pelletier gives a little bump but expecting a rookie to come in to make a huge difference is really optimistic.

The following year when Lucic and Monahan come off the books is time to put up or shut up. A lot of the core will still be around and we have 11.5 mil to replace two fourth liners and add some offence.

I can't recall...how many years does BT have on his deal? Does his contract time out at the same time that Sutter's does?

Both BT and Sutter have one year left after this year

Extension in October of 2019.

To me that means the 19-20 season was on the old deal which would mean a three year extension (not sure if it's 3 years) would be

20-21
21-22
22-23

Guessing one year left after this one.

Both Treliving and Sutter deals expire at the same time.

Boy it is going to be a VERY interesting summer. I'm never a fan of having a GM with one year left. It seems like the re-commitment comes this summer or the writing is on the wall.

I'm wondering if there ever was a GM who built as flawed of a team after 8 years on the the job, starting from scratch

LW: superstar, star, top 6, top 9

C: 2C, 3C, 4C, AHL

RW: Nothing of note depending on how they throw the darts

D: 4 3D's and a bunch of 7's

G Top 10/15 guy... least of their problems but every other year mediocre

That said, the outright loss of Tavares and Pietroangelo undoubtedly was heavily criticized in those two markets. Let’s not pretend they weren’t. You point to Barzal being able to absorb that loss because Barzal was waiting in the wings. Doesn’t change the fact the lost Tavares, who is also a 1C.

On the other hand if the Flames were to lose a player at a specific position, LW would be it. I’ll be a bit surprised if all of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Dube, Pelletier, Zary are back with the team/organization next year. I’m not convinced all of them are here once this TDL passes.
Of course it was going to be heavily criticized, they were the franchise backbones of their respective organizations.

But winning cures all and when your team is still good enough to win sans star, a fanbase can forgive. But I’m not confident this organization will win much without #13 at all based on what I’ve seen on the ice and on the stat sheets.

I honestly think the jury on Treliving is on his belief that he had a core to build around.

Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Lindholm.
Giordano, Hanifin, Brodie/Tanev

Gaudreau and Tkachuk are bouncing back, and Lindholm is a #1 center not a 2 in my mind.

Monahan's fall, injury related or not, is the single biggest issue with the way the team in constructed.

If you think that's his fault, I'm fine with that as it's a bet that didn't pay off. Personally I didn't see Monahan's injuries/fall coming so I felt they had two centers and two elite wingers and a decent foundation.

But it didn't work, and it's a results business, so if they move on I'm fine with that.

However personally I'm a little hesitant to get out the pitchforks for a guy that was making the same assumption that I (and many) made.

I never saw true 1C in Monahan. To me it was clear he was Rob Brown or Jonathan Cheechoo the whole time.

Take out the Monahan card and the house tumbles... nothing else works if you take out that card

It doesn't matter what me or you saw, Brad has been paid millions to get it right and he was fooled on the most important thing. With that hole in the ship, it was always going down. Eichel was the life jacket that he didn't have enough money to buy despite having years to save for it

Yeah I’m in the same boat. I’ve never liked Monahan’s game. Very few weapons, really average to poor skating and agility. Suspect defensive game. No checking ability whatsoever.

Treliving got fooled too which is ok for a fan, but for a professional GM with a team of professional scouts who are paid extremely well to have a keen eye. Not so good.

I have often wondered had Treliving done nothing, how much better this team would be. Would we have a Jordan Kyrou and/or a Mat Barzal (both by the way would be really helpful to this team right about now)? Who would we have selected in the first round of 2018? Would any of those wasted seconds + thirds amount to anything? Food for thought.

Monahan scored 22 goals his rookie year (without Gaudreau) and had been one of the most consistent scorers this franchise has seen. I think a lot of the criticism being thrown at Treliving is using hindsight. His fall has been fast in the last couple years and injuries catching up to him.

During 2018-2019 I am sure many were lauding the steal his contract was.

I certainly never saw an élite top line center in Monahan, but I did see a productive center that can play with skill, which he was.

Getting Lindholm as a true north/south center gave the team a pretty deep center core with Backlund as a 3C and a great shut down guy.

But Monahan slides out of that productive role and now you have two 3Cs and it's not well constructed.

But yeah you can fire the guy if you want, as it didn't work and it's about results.

However like I said, if Monahan doesn't lose it on injuries it's a different discussion.

Fooled?

Not sure you can say that. I'm sure they knew who Sean Monahan was at all times. But he got hurt, so the part of the game he was good at is gone.
