It wasn’t called back for offside, they couldn’t find offside so then just called Cavani was impeded instead and was a foul because konsa was standing still

Pretty standard stuff though. People always talk about the 'Premium.'
Big clubs with hefty finances often have to overpay, especially for English players.

Chris Wood isn't English, he's from Auckland, New Zealand, which is almost twenty-four thousand kilometers from Burnley.
Burnley bought him four and a half years ago from Leeds for fifteen million, and he's scored more than once every three matches in that time. He was a one goal in two games player for Leeds. He's scored ten, ten, fourteen, and twelve goals in the last four Premier League seasons. I don't think there are many players that have hit double digits over the past four years, especially for a team as poor as Burnley
What kills me is that they're basically admitting defeat and willing to sell to a relegation rival. Burnley are almost certain to go down now, and Tarkowski and Mee can both leave at the end of the season on free transfers.
Watford, Burnley, and Norwich are going to finish in the bottom three.

A couple things. It's £25 million, not £20 million. And Burnley aren't selling, somehow, someway, Chris Wood has a release clause. So obviously for Newcastle this is more about screwing Burnley then actually thinking Wood is worth it. I applaud the pettiness, though it only increases my desire to see Newcastle go down and have this signing work against them for FFP.

I don't disagree. the guy has produced for Burnley and for a bubble team / bottom league team, i think he is a great add. He is also 29 so you are pretty much hoping he ages well. I guess NU don't care as much about the money as about staying up.

This makes way more sense, thanks for posting. I couldn't figure out why Burnley would agree to a sale.

It’s not really just pettiness, but good business. Newcastle weakens a team they’re against for relegation, and Wood might score a few to help them stay up. They have a big game against Watford coming up, and I think Callum Wilson is banged up.
And really, there’s no way Wood is worth the £25m, but they don’t care about £10-15m. That’s the problem with a team owned by a country (with the other problems being ethical, of course).

there's no way getting Chris Wood for £25m is "good business". I don't give a #### about the circumstances, paying such an amount for a 30 year old striker with 3 goals on the season is nothing but absurd and you can't really justify it by saying "well they don't care about the money" either. It's just a stupid deal, anyway you slice it.

I don’t know about that. It’s a good deal for Newcastle because the money is gone one way or another. If they get relegated, they lose more than that, and in this case they weaken Burnley at the same time.

I kinda have to agree with Slava here. They weaken a direct relegation opponent.
Its kinda brilliant in its own shifty way.

oh I get the weaken your opponent argument for sure. Just saying it's terrible value pound for pound. And frankly, if I'm a club and Newcastle wants to sign one of my players now, I no longer double the price, I quadruple it. Because they don't care about the money, right?

Haha, well the lineup for the League Cup match is out, and this looks interesting. Full-strength Chelsea against a bizarre series of choices for Spurs. This is either going to a beatdown and Chelsea is through to the final with ease, or a Conte masterclass of some sort. Relying on Gollini to pull this out seems unlikely, to put it mildly.

I thought Lloris had gotten hurt and I didn’t realize but nope - bench
Reguilon doesn’t even make the bench?

Yeah, it's weird. I thought they said that Reguilon was just tired this past weekend, but maybe it's more than that. Having Doherty at LB though? Not a great call (but what do I know?)
I just have a feeling this could be over pretty quick. Maybe it's Conte sending a message to Levy and Paratici. I have no idea.

I disagree with you. It's market rate and the best comparable is Callum Wilson. I think everybody who follows NUFC, as well as wider football audience think Callum Wilson was a fantastic signing. Let's compare Chris Wood to Wilson
1. Last year Chris Wood tied Callum Wilson for goals with 12.
2. Chris Wood was born Dec 1991, Callum Wilson Feb 1992. They are 3 months apart in age.
3. Callum Wilson was a summer transfer at £20M. Chris Wood is a January Transfer window at up to £25M. The extra £5M is easily explained by January transfer window + finding somebody to come to a relegation battle + meeting a release clause.
In addition, there is the financial and strategic cost of relegation. Going down was pegged at £100M in 2018, I'm sure now it is more, maybe up to $150M with the new TV deals (that's a guess). For newcastle it's even more, as it delays their longer-term ambition of champions leage.
If I was the owners, and had money, I'd try and spend £150m to ensure I don't go down, as that's likely break-even on loss of funds, irrespective of strategic cost. They need a striker with premiership success who is available and willing to go to to Newcastle. I believe Wood may be the only person who fits that bill, and the price paid is market price.
