Never know with QBs though. I thought Herbert would be a bust. I thought he'd be Jake Locker.

^^We all did. Just being an Oregon QB made me assume bust. But we've seen him now for two years and he clearly is a franchise QB. Some of those throws in the SNF game, even ignoring the context of the game, were insanely good. Apply the context and it just heightens how great they were. Chargers just need to draft Oline and D heavy the next couple drafts and they'll have the team in place to win a lot.

Yet they kept the man that made that decision and fired the man that coached a pretty limited roster to a winning record in back to back seasons. Go figure.

To me Tua looked pretty limited going into the draft. You can teach footwork and work on accuracy but you can't teach arm strength. Herbert had an elite arm and Tua has a below average arm. To me he looked like Teddy Bridgewater.

Yeah, Ross seems pretty chummy with Grier. It's not as if the Dolphins have had a steady stream of pro bowl talent that has underachieved in Griers tenure.

I think Tua can be a serviceable game manager. But those Cousins/Garappolo/Tannehill types need a flawless roster around them to win more than 2 playoff games a year. The Dolphins are not even close talentwise to what those other guys have to work with.

Joe Judge kind of fired himself with his post game meltdown comments last weekend.

Genius with the benefit of hindsight much?

Not trading down to #41 and taking Jonathon Taylor was the mistake.

Anyone else have the feeling San Fran is going to eliminate Dallas? That looks like a fun game!

Of course hindsight is great, but at the time their decision was Tua or Herbert. It wasn't like Herbert was projected as a low first rounder, everyone had both of them going to either the Dolphins or Chargers (or someone else if they traded over them). Tua was viewed as the safer pick, the surer thing, and Herbert had greater physical tools, but higher bust potential. The Dolphins chose Tua, and they were very wrong (for the record the Chiefs drafting Edwards-Helaire over Taylor might be just as bad, but whiffing on the least valuable position in the league is far less damaging than the most important position in the league).

The more interesting question is would Herbert actually usurp Burrow as the #1 overall pick in a redraft? I think it'd be very, very close but I'd probably take Herbert myself.

Tua over Herbert was a perfectly reasonable decision at the time, just like Darnold over Allen was and so on. Those decisions look stupid in hindsight for sure, but you just never know how these kids develop.

Oh sure it was a reasonable decision. Doesn't mean it wasn't a massive mistake though, and one that has put the Dolphins in their current turmoil. By all accounts Flores wanted Herbert and he was the one who wanted Deshaun. Tua is what he is, he has the dreaded Alex Smith ceiling. Flores wanted better and got shown the door.

Of course! It's the Cowboys, they have a way of disappointing in big situations. The 49'ers will be just fine as long as Jimmy G doesn't have a meltdown.

Coaching and situation means so much for rookies.

Herbert and Burrow have went to teams where they have let them open things up a little more, and they had the full support of the entire organization.

Tagovailoa was never really trusted by Flores and because of that I'm not sure we've really seen what he is yet.

Of course at this point you'd rather have Herbert or Burrow, but would be interesting to see if Tua takes a step forward with a coach that actually seems to want him on the team and trusts him.

The biggest mistake seems to be that the GM didn't take who the coach wanted, and then the coach seemed to hold that against the player.

Fans love to believe progression is linear. We all fall victim to it. If Macorkle goes to Detroit is he any good? If the Broncos take Josh Allen does the grow into the player he is? The hindsight game is fun but any halfway intelligent fan knows that especially with quarterbacks playing that game is silly. Helps pass the time during a slow news week though, I suppose it’s why First Take stays on the air.

Didn't Tua miss an entire year due to injury in his draft year? I didn't follow it too closely but I seem to recall a lot of doubts around him as well as if he'd recover fully.

Something about Tua and his throwing motion has always bugged me. I don't think he has a good arm.

I personally find it kind of funny that Hurts got benched for Tua, was drafted way after Tua but looks like the more serviceable NFL QB at this point.
