I've heard crazier ideas. Kind of a cross between Silicon Valley and Nashville markets. But smaller.

Still there is no arena and zero talk about any rich dudes looking to bring a pro sports team there. The AHL team averages about 5,000 fans and there is very little grass roots hockey in central Texas. And I don't think attracting pro sports is high on the civic leaders agenda, just not that kind of place.

You could see some crazy rich person thinking it would be fun to try.

At 3 times the size, Houston is probably a safer bet but Fertitta seems to have no interest.

Good to see all these recent posts on the Coyotes happened on a Monday.

I don't know how that article is a green light to relocation, the team only needs 1 of 2 votes to flip and in reality they're probably going to get 2 of 2.

But it's definitely negotiation time on this thing.

The list of reasons to stay is shorter than its ever been.

Does the business case for the Tempe arena make any sense? Sounds like the Suns want to renovate their arena, so you'd end up with 3 buildings competing for concerts and other events.

3 years of wandering the desert...and then there is still no guarantee of a particularly strong fanbase.

Phoenix/Suns have completed the renovations. That's done

The demographics for the Coyotes and desire for an arena on the east side of Central have been a need for the team to succeed.

I know it's all or nothing with Tempe and apparently a plan B in salt river indian land, that's no surprise. A 16,000 seat building in either plan a or b locations will be successful. But if this ownership group can't pull it off or if they keep shooting themselves in the foot then the team is gone.

Is Dallas also, because its murder rate increased more (see also Memphis, Indianapolis, Louisville). And that’s the increase. It started at a pretty low number so it’s still pretty low per capita (1.79 versus say 11.5 for Memphis, 10.2 for Atlanta, 9.66 for Kansas City, to use random examples).

To be fair, a 5000 seater is perfect for the Coyotes and their fanbase of about 4000 fans. But gotta give Gary credit for his steadfast refusal to admit failure, he'd rather have a lot of Canadian Junior rinks have a higher capacity then an NHL team just to avoid admitting defeat.

They're averaging 11.5k this year so it'd be a pretty significant reduction in gate revenue. But that atmosphere in a confined space could be really electric.

If the NHL doesn't want to be perceived as a mickey mouse league, they cannot let the Coyotes play in a 5,000 seat capacity arena. They'd be better off playing in Saskatoon for heavens sake.

4000 fans huh.

Also Bettman dig, check…

Never gets old.

Have you not heard about the Entertainment district?? That the owners are paying $1.7 Billion on?

This temporary solution does make the most sense. Hope it happens

The league has been playing In front of 0 spectators for about 2 years now many many times over

The pandemic isn’t gone and won’t be gone for a while. I don’t think anyone outside of Canada really care and this will only happen if there is a clear path to the new arena. This could be a fun marketable solution for a while to bridge the gap

Also, it’s not unprecedented in pro sports for a team to play in a significantly smaller stadium. The Chargers played in a smaller MLS stadium for a while until their stadium was built.

The Chargers, like the Coyotes, are also widely derided for having no fans. The Rams are about to play a road game in the playoffs at their home stadium because they have no fans. But, you know, NFL teams are kinda profitable off the TV deal alone. Coyotes will still lose money even when (if?) they get a decent arena. Some markets just suck. Phoenix sucks as a hockey market, always has, always will.

TBL, OTT, and SJ played their first few years in 10-11k arenas.

It looks like a team hasn't played in 6k or less since the 1920s!

This league is clownshoes brother.

Just admit failure and move it to Houston.
