A while back I looked through EDM and CGY event calendars for 2018:
CGY missed out on:
Old Dominion
Avenged Sevenfold
Brantley Gilbert
Jeff Dunham
Shania Twain (2 nights)
Paul McCartney
Drake (2 nights)
We got and they didn't (unless it was at a different venue in EDM):
Ellen Degeneres
Stars on Ice
Brad Paisley (Stampede)
Luke Bryan (Stampede)
UFC
Cirque Wonderland
Fleetwood Mac? (I know they've postponed show(s) in the last few years due to illness, not sure if this one happened or was a re-schedule)
It certainly skews in EDM's favour, but not by that much. Even if/when we do get a strong-roofed arena, there is no guarantee we get every big show that comes through EDM. The balance probably comes a lot closer, but there will still be shows that only do one city or the other.

Not that I'm a country music fan, but a few years back didn't EDM get something like 6 Garth Brooks concerts and we got none?

That sounds like a 'bullet dodged.'
Chalk that one up in the 'Win' column for Calgary and the 'Dome.

In 2017 he did 7 sold-out concerts in Calgary.

He did 9 shows in Edmonton in February 2017. Then he did 7 shows in Calgary in September 2017.

I believe Brooks also did a show in Calgary during Stampede 2012 after a decade+ of hardly touring at all

Calgary Stampede is a bit of an equalizer (monstly one genre) but still the big shows are going to the dome and it won't last forever. Tax payers will pay to keep it up and eventually a new building.
I think Drake is the lamest artist on earth he was on degrassi for FFS nice street cred this generation is stupid and so easily manipulated /rant
that being said he was the top selling artist in the world in 2018...2x Edmonton and Zero Calgary. The youngins on here are always going on about culture ect.
Paul McCartney, well it doesn't get bigger than that
Metallica also played Edmonton twice since the last Calgary show, TBF one was at Commonwealth so that is an argument for another day.

The City may not be involved in financing, but it will definitely be "involved". Planning, transportation, security, support infrastructure, etc. etc.
All will add costs. And the City will be expected to bear the costs of some of that support infrastructure - could be sewers, widening roads, adding an LRT station or two and so on.
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. (TANSTAFL for the Heinlein fans).

Maybe Garth Brooks should be a financial partner?

Yeah, sourced info would be great.
Do you have any to add?

No kidding. He had 16 sold out shows in Alberta, basically in a row? I had no idea.

That's one year tho.
JayZ. Kanye. Justin Timberlake all played Edmonton instead of Calgary.
I like concerts and I want them in my city and Edmonton gets them and we don't. It sucks.

Story time:
After two shows in Calgary, he realised the third deck wasn’t used. He didn’t like that so he asked they be opened up and donated ALL the sales to charity through the Flames Foundation.

So if the Flames do end up moving do they go to Houston?
Houston Flames has a pretty good ring to it tbh. Also so much of our oil and gas industry left Alberta for Texas. Seems only fitting our NHL team follows suit.
What are the benefits of Houston? Newer arena I assume? Larger fan base and likely a better TV deal?
Would the owners keep the team and move or would they sell it to a Houston buyer?

There's no way Houston has a larger NHL fan base or NHL TV market than Calgary. I suppose that, due to its much larger population, it has the potential to one day be a larger NHL market, but that wouldn't happen for decades, if ever (just in time to need a new publicly-funded arena!)
