I don't think the timeout is the deal the drama queens are making it out to be. AFC West teams hate each other. Their rivalries go back to the AFL. So if there is a reasonable chance to eliminate one they want the kill. If the Chargers can stop the Raiders on third down, maybe the Raiders run it down as far as they can...but they still try the Field goal.
But Jacob's made the play to get them into easier range. Those teams fought too hard to not give it one last go to win. Give the Raiders credit they were 6-7 and looking done, but rally off 4 straight to earn their way in.

Who cares if they changed their play? How is changing the play in any way relevant to the timeout being a bad idea? They ran the ball anyways. It was 3rd and 4, not 3rd and 14. And maybe they changed their play because they didn’t like what they saw from Chargers D.

Honestly Raiders probably win anyway its just a pointless TO by a coach that didn't understand the situation

They would start on their own 45 with 30 seconds left. Americans just don't believe in ties. It's dirty.

The Chargers season depended on the next play, couldn't afford to give up anything. Pretty good reason to call a time out and set your defense. The next play wasn't nearly as important to the Raiders, they had the tie sewn up. The two seconds it saved were 100% irrelevant.
Hell maybe the Chargers defense had checked out because they thought Raiders were conceding and he needed to remind them that they needed a stop.
I just don't get where you're coming from here. I guess you know the play the Raiders originally called wasn't going to work and the play they switched to did?
I think upon reflection people realize the timeout was fine but still need to defend their initial outrage.

I think it was a dumb call, as a Raider fan I am happy they made a dumb call...the Raiders had about 15 chances to win this game with one play and blew every single one of them. They were more than willing to go for a tie by all accounts. Listening to Rich Bisaccia and Carr in the post gamers it certainly seems like the Raiders were thinking about a tie and thought the Chargers were thinking the same thing until the TO.
I have nothing to justify to anyone on CP, in my opinion its a poor call...not outraged I ####ing loved it.
and no I don't know what the original play would have done, I do know what happened right after the TO

Hard to say. I think at that point the Chargers were getting the Raiders in a 4th and 4 with a 58 yard field goal as an option was their best chance to get a tie. Say they stuff the Raiders there, I'm not so sure they want to force the field goal attempt in Hope's of getting the ball back.

The Chargers would have called timeout again to force the Raiders to punt which could also be dangerous.
Again, it's pointless. Tie was enough.

I mean the Raiders coach said they were thinking about the tie and waiting to see if the Chargers were gonna call a TO.
"we talked about it and waited to see if they would call a TO, we were certainly thinking about it"
Raiders after almost blowing the game 15 times were certainly thinking about a gentleman's agreement
It likely doesn't change the outcome but by signaling to the Raiders they weren't gonna play for the tie it changed the Raiders strategy. Poor call IMO, at that Point a tie was the Chargers only real hope

Yeah at that point their best hope is the Raiders try a 55 yard FG and miss, which gives them the ball at the 45. I think that anything inside 58 yards, the Raiders were going for the Field goal. Carlsson might not have Janikowski's leg.. but he's exceptionally accurate from long distances in controlled environments.

I haven't heard the bolded. I only heard Carr saying they were going for the win. If they were playing for the tie, why were they running plays instead of kneeling?
You don't need to defend your opinion if you don't want. It's an internet discussion and you expressed an extremely strong opinion, calling the Chargers f***ing idiots which IMO seemed a little strong for a meaningless timeout.

If this is true then it's a shame for the Chargers players because they played their butts off, down 15, converted 6 4th down to earn that tie and playoff spot.

They did play their butts off. But nobody deserves to have a result handed to them.
But since the Raiders weren't kneeling, they also knew they couldn't let them get any closer for an even easier field goal try. He's a genius if coming out of the timeout they call a run blitz and stuff them for a four yard loss.

I don't know what more you need...the Raiders coach himself said they "were certainly thinking about a tie and waiting to see what they would do timeout wise" I know the Raiders really well it looked to me like they were content to run VERY conservative run plays.
The timeout was a bit of an FU to the tie idea so the Raiders decided to be more aggressive. Its a message board, I call coaches and players idiots all the time lol
The coach and the QB has have come out and said the TO totally changed their strategy...what else could that possibly mean? IMO Raiders were gonna run another draw up the middle, kill the clock and try a long FG.

That comment can mean s lot of different things. It's not like the Raiders ran play action and gunned a 20 yard pass down the middle for the first down. They still ran a run play after the time out. No team lines up in a standard formation making calls to take a knee...you would get your O line killed.
For all we know Carr might have called one with a second left on the play clock if he felt the protection wasn't right.
