Has anybody else notice the cost of car batteries go through the roof? Is it just a supply chain issue or has something else gone up a lot, perhaps internal materials?
I may need to replace a few batteries come spring time and I am looking at some prices and it looks to have doubled. Is this accurate? I am talking about regular batteries for Honda Pilot's, Toyota Rav 4's, Honda Civic's etc

Shipping costs are the biggest reason for price increase on batteries. One year ago shipping a container of batteries from Asia cost $9000, today shipping the same container costs $40,000. Newer vehicles also require more expensive batteries, anything pre stop/ start, a conventional, inexpensive lead acid battery will do. Newer vehicles equipped with stop/ start use basically a hybrid battery do to the amount of cycling the vehicles do. These batteries have a lower CA/ CCA to begin with and shed their plates faster, not ideal for our Climate. The battery life is much shorter in start/ stop batteries especially in our climate.

I managed 8 years out of my AGM battery, 90AH 900CCA. When I replaced it in November it had a 10/13 stamp on the terminal. If you disable the auto start stop they seem to last a ton longer than the traditional 5 years.
So in the long term, do these start/stop systems really save anything when you take into account the need for more expensive hybrid batteries and beefier starter motors that (presumably) don't last as long? Or is it just a buch of greenwashing, with the consumer getting stuck with the higher cost?

It is 100% only for the car makers to meet epa regulations. I wish you could permanently disable it. Apparently, in the new f150 you can factory order it to stay off.

I have a regular flooded battery in my Odyssey and I swear its the world's worst battery - discharges so quickly if you run the power doors, etc, without the engine running. End up using my booster pack like once every month or two. Seems to handle the cold fine, but man, what a pita - considering replacing it even though it seems to work fine.

AFAIK every time it fully discharges its performance gets worse and worse.

AGM was $285 from BMW. I think they are absolutely worth it if you have a ton of load or the regular battery is fading. I had to charge it occasionally in the really cold when it would chime as a bit low on the dash, but always started and lasted forever. See if Crappy Tire has an AGM for the odyssey, they are rebranded Exide, same as BMW OEM.

New Silverado, though it looks a lot more like the Avalanche. Is this unibody? Seems an odd chose to call it the Silverado. Don't really like the blanking plate on the grill, but the front looks much better than the gas versions.

If you’re boosting it that often, it’s not fine. Or your alternator output is not fine. But no lead acid battery in good health should be doing that.
Every discharge is hard on a battery. You can actually restore them, but boosting a dead battery and driving normally will not do it.

While the bed is 5.9 feet long in its normal configuration, dropping the midgate and setting the tailgate in its bed-extending setting grows the length to 10 feet, 10 inches. Need more storage? A front trunk can handle three large suitcases.
Kind of hilarious my 2002 S-10 has 1,160lb payload, and this monster can only muster a little more. I suppose those batteries are taking up most of the weight. This looks a lot more "lifestyle" than the F-150 which looks a lot more work truck like. If I was a contractor looking for a work truck, the Lightning looks better for that. But the Chevy looks more flexible for different uses. Good to have choices! You are up next, Dodge. Watcha got?

Right. Good is theory but it’s nothing actual truck users want. What does in the bed of your average truck that isn’t driven exclusively for the mall crowd? Tools, Motorbikes, ATVs, camping gear, landscaping materials etc. All the #### you absolutely don’t want all over the interior of your $80k interior.
And who doesn’t love multiple failure points and ####ing around with movable windows and panels? The original avalanche dwindled to measly sales at the end of its life for a reason. Like so many things, cool concept and oh so practical. Then you learn that for the 4 times a year you might want to carry 8’ of lumber, you’ll just stick it out the back and there’s no way in hell John is using the interior space of your truck to haul his quad home.

You could say the same thing about any small truck too but people here always seem to disagree.
I will say this, I have a soft spot for old Chevs and a few years ago restored an '04 Avalanche. Gotta say, I scoffed at that thing for years but now I love it. The folding midgate and insulated bed is perfect for camping. I haven't hauled in it much since I have other trucks for that, but for ####s and giggles I did use it to help my Aunt move some old furniture to storage and was surprised at how much you could cram in that thing. I'd seriously consider a new one and might actually take a look at this new EV Silverado since I imagine my place in line for the F150 Lightning is like, 5 years away at this point
