Inflation is pretty much a constant, but what we've seen on this building (up 28% or so in 18 months) is outside what you'd expect (3%)
In doing Condo and Building Reserve Fund studies, we use more like 6-7% for "construction inflation" which tends to run much hotter than consumer inflation.

Short term, no. Long term, who knows. Eventually they need to move to a new building.

Have to re-listen but Flames Nation (aka Freeway here at CP) had great segment on Jeff Marek this AM. Worth a listen.

Short term no.
Long term no.

The Flames have a 10 year lease in the Dome.

The market remains highly viable.

The Flames still need a new arena.
The city still needs a new event centre.

Once costs can be more verified construction will begin.

No one really like the USB Hard drive complex anyways. It will figure itself out in time.

I think Carter when using words like "boasting" is echoing what the councillors stated in this press conference Dec 22. Not me. LOL.

By the way, this is what the article is referring to from Calgary Planning Commission - when Cllr Wong asked about the climate change mitigation approach the project member from HOK answered this way: "The climate studies have been an important part of the overall design from the very beginning, from early concept and we’ve worked very hard."

Full answer at 17:14 including on-site renewable energy, district energy, etc.

I think Carter is suggesting the idea that climate mitigation was some cost foisted upon the flames at the last minute belies the truth.

4/6 I did not support that deal.

Since I was elected Mayor, Administration & my office have been working with CSEC to mitigate any additional costs. Two costs were identified: climate mitigation of around $4m and road/sidewalk right of way issues of $12.1m.

OK. Might be a silly question. Why were these issues not identified when they made the final deal in July 2021?

Nope. We weren't in that year. They did play the years I was there though.

I've been there with two bands: The Reuben Kincaids, which was my bar band, and later just with a bunch of people from my firm (and there was some overlap in those two).

I dont know if I can go through another arena ordeal.

Do I have 'Arena Fatigue?' Or is it just City vs. Flames bickering that I tire of?

I dont know. This is like breaking up children who are fighting in the back of the car on a long road trip.

Okay everyone..."Back to Winnipeg!"

Perhaps the City with CMLC (and a new architect) should just build the event centre sans CSEC but then upon completion negotiate a lease deal with CSEC that in turn they end up paying more than 50%. City keeps naming rights fees and all concert ticket revenue.

Get outta here with your reasonable takes based on information that's available on the public record Bunk, this is all the City's fault because they don't understand BUSINESS and they want to see the Flames leave!

It is possible for someone to have a well thought out opinion that is different from one’s own. Free thought and free speech are foundational to our society, and maybe we can all learn from listening to well-researched opposing views.

Edit: my sarcasm meter may have been malfunctioning.
Yedlin is a pretty well known pro-business advocate - hence her Chamber of Commerce position. I think it's fair to say she has written favoably about Edwards over the years, and they've been together on a number of events.

I think we'll magically see the arena deal re-energized when steel goes back to normalish

Steel, concrete, electrical switchgear, coatings, PVC, control devices, trucking...

The price to build anything has increased exponentially in the past 18 months, and procurement of said materials are taking 2-3x longer what they'd normally be. While disappointing, the motive for either side to wiggle out of this deal exists.

These clowns (on both sides) should have gotten their poop in a group a decade ago.

Not only that, but there would be much less of a PR battle and finger pointing if they just simply said "prices of our key materials are skyrocketing - we're pressing pause until we have greater certainty and control over our costs".
