This is just so ####### embarrassing for everyone involved. How incompetent are these people? And I mean the city and CSEC. Every single other place on planet earth seems to be able to get some kind of deal done. But not us.

I just don’t understand how they can’t get something done. It’s simply astounding. You cannot make this up. Decades of arguing, we finally get a deal, and the plug is pulled right before it starts? Give me a break.

The team needs the arena. The city needs the arena. Our taxes paid for the building in Edmonton, you’re telling me the province can’t kick in a few million bucks? But they have millions to give away for a vaccine lottery?

This is just frustrating beyond belief. The city and the Flames should be too embarrassed to even announce this.

Agreed. While this isn’t falling apart over $9MM, more like $50MM, Edwards and crew still stand to make tens of millions off of it and the city is also not acting in good faith.

Just ####ing build it, add up total costs and split it 50/50. CSEC already agreed to the new climate costs or whatever the hell they are in November so let’s get on with it. So stupid. As for the city, you need it, you’ll build one even if the Flames leave, so put the damn money up as it’ll be way more useful than rusted iron galloping horses on the side of a highway as some BS faux “art”.

Get it done already FFS.

As it says in that story, the Kings have been doing a "destination" game during the preseason almost every year since the late 90s. They used to play (usually the Avs) in Vegas every year, but that's no longer an option.

There really aren't any other big cities in the west that would work that don't already have an NHL team or an affiliated team. Portland is the only other one, but it's pretty close to Seattle. Sacramento and San Francisco are both close to San Jose (and I don't know if either of their new arenas even have an ice plant). San Diego is the home of the Ducks' AHL team.

Vegas and Denver are both closer to SLC than LA is, but it's still pretty far from both as well (I believe SLC is in the Vegas tv region).

For the Kings, it was probably either shift their "destination" game to Salt Lake or cancel it, so they moved it to Utah.

BTW, here's a photo from this year's game that shows the "canyon" effect with the retracted seats that I mentioned before...

If the Flames owners wanted to get Kenney to throw a bunch of provincial tax money at the new arena, they should just float the idea of selling the team to Pierre Karl Péladeau and moving it to Québec City.

That would probably be enough to get the money to build two arenas.

I don't see where any extra provincial money was given to Edmonton for the arena.
I thought all Edmonton did was allocate monies that the city received regardless. I don't believe they received anything extra for the arena.

Ah okay. I thought they got the money from the province directly but that would make a lot more sense.

This is insane that this happened to be honest.

Murray Edwards is an absolute joke, this isn't on the City.. He got cold feet and was looking for an out. He needs to sell his stake in the team which he has wanted to do for years and probably was his plan once the new arena was completed with it's new value. Now he just doesn't want to pay.

Pretty simple, wouldn't surprise me if he asked the Mayor to kill the deal.

Citation on the bolded? All indications are that Murray is one of the most engaged owners in the league...but maybe that his changed along with his residency...

Oh well....as I no longer live there it's kinda moot to me, but it still pisses me off that the Flames have an ownership group now that is nothing like the Hotchkiss / Seaman group who were clearly and evidently civic-minded and would NEVER have allowed this to degrade this far.

All about greed to me on the ownership side and stupidity and obstinacy on the City's part.

If his goal was to sell the team, it would make more sense to get the arena built as it would have doubled the team's value.

I dunno.... I remember Normie Kwong whining in the media prior to the big Saddledome upgrade. The team later got Federal Infrastructure money, if I'm not mistaken.

Edmonton got a new arena because the city paid for practically the entire thing AND threw development goodies at Katz. That is the worst arena deal possible. Guess that is what happens when you're entire city has so little going for it that the thought of losing a perennially pathetic hockey team is devastating. City of Champions!!!!!

I'm sure that precedent of funding that arena is why CSEC feels the city can pony up the last $10mil to get this done. Alternatively, Calgary city council isn't shaking in their boots at the unlikely possibility if the Flames moving.

It will get done, this is just part of determining where the final chips are going to fall.

If cost certainty is more in place in the next months/couple of years that CSEC is not concerned about the price tag continuing to rise up, and possibly get closer to the originally 50/50 split that was initially desired, than yes, they would've won this round.

Both parties needs this, but with the environment the way it is right now, it's probably a better bet to wait for more ideal conditions. Does suck that this possibly pushes this down even more years now.

Hard to be mad at either party for not wanting to commit to a rising cost project.

I just don't see a black hat in this.

Both sides are completely within their rights to take an off ramp if they don't like the total bill. Even more so with one side now on the hook for 100% of the overruns.
