The Flyers would have to do a lot of work to fit in Gaudreau but the Islanders and Devils are the teams to watch out for as I think he's going to one of those two teams.

I got nervous the day his NTC started.
Unlike many, I dont get emotionally attached to most players on teams i cheer for, with some exceptions to be sure. The whole "logo on the front before the name on the back" thing.
JG isnt just the Flames best offensive player, he is arguably their biggest asset as well.
Now it stands that the club can lose both for absolutely nothing in about 6 months and that decision has been completely removed from the teams hands.
I understand why as well, because BT's seat has to be very warm and trading JG this past off-season likely meant no playoffs which would have him seeking employment elsewhere the day after this season ended. Self preservation is a very underrated driver of decision making in pro sports afterall.
No one could have forced JG to sign before this deal was up, but no one could have stopped the club from dealing him before the NTC became a thing either.
He may very well end up coming back, but the cost will be much higher than it would have been and there is zero reason for Gaudreau not to see what is out there in FA. This is a fail by management especially when there is another guy coming up for renewal next year that is going to cost a whole lot as well.

If Johnny walks for nothing, Treliving should be shown the door immediately. That would be one of the greatest mismanagement of assets ever.

Maybe the plan was to not commit for 8 years at 80 mill for a player who still had questions to answer. Maybe they wanted to see a full year of Johnny and Sutter together before they paid that kind of coin. Maybe, like most people, the flames still had no idea what this team even was in the offseason and wanted to stay nimble. Yes, he's walked himself into a high leverage situation, but if the player and team are happy, it'll get done more often than not.

So cute the idea that he's going to re-up a few months before Ufa. Wishful thinking and steadfast belief that team management is competent. Where does it come from? Power of positive thinking? This is Brad Treliving and the Calgary Flames here. Of course Johnny's leaving for nothing. Team history and this GM in particular have a track record of not understanding asset management. It's one year at a time, hope for the best, playoffs or bust, no long term plan... every year for literally decades lol

I think staying in Calgary would be very appealing for Gaudreau. He knows the organization, he knows the City, has publicly said he is happy here on a number of occasions. No question, the Flames are going to have to pay but I would think there is as good a chance as any other team to sign him. Plus the Flames can give him that 8th year. If things don’t work out here, he and the team can always look to move on from one another. Despite the fact people think Treliving has royally screwed this up, he probably has a much better grasp on what is at stake than anyone here does. He doesn’t seem too panicked to me and I’m not seeing/hearing anything from credible sources that say Gaudreau has one foot out the door.

Wouldn't be surprised if Johnny and Tre have already talked and have a mutual agreement in place. This would explain why there doesn't seem to be panic or concern on either side. Johnny seems happy and is playing hard doing everything the coach is asking him. He indicated he wants to stay if the team wants to keep him. Looking at how the team is playing right now is a bonus.

Then why hasn't it been signed and registered with the league offices? To what benefit is there to sit on this? If the T&Cs have been agreed to, why would this not be submitted? This only allows for one party to get cold feet and dash the whole thing. No one lets that happen when something so important is on the line.

If there was an agreement it would be signed, sealed, and delivered.
There is ZERO chance JG would risk a career ending injury while playing if he had 80M (or whatever the total would be) guaranteed just sitting on the table.
Or he just isnt signing it for.....reasons?

So some happy thoughts then.
Good on you to take the role of squashing all hope and labeling anyone that disagrees with you as "cute" or "wishful thinking"
We literally have no idea what's going on.
We don't know what was on the table.
What was discussed.
What is being discussed.
He could certainly leave, I could see that 100%, but it's far from as sure as you're making it out to be.
And I say that without being cute or wishful, nor am I using may max power of positive thinking.

They look pretty good right now, no? Not everything is a hyperbolic version of every slightly negative thing.
Other way to look at it is, would you rather be watching this team now without Gaudreau but with a late first for next draft and some b prospect? Even if Gaudreau walks, I don't think that's a huge win. I'd take a good season over that any day actually.

How about liking the situation that he's in and not feeling the need for change? I'm not saying that's what he'll do but it's not like athletes don't ever give up free agency to re-sign long term with their current team before hitting free agency.

I get that you don't like the idea of fans being negative about the team. I don't feel I'm really being negative though. This is just predictable based on 30 years of following this team. I used to give them the benefit of the doubt, used to think the flames would see their day. The culture of losing and bad management has poisoned me I guess? Now they finally look good for one pandemic season and I can see the car going over the cliff in a few months. Oh, and now the team relocating is a possibility? It's like some sort of comedic tragedy. Winning in the forum really did curse this franchise.
Maybe I was being an ass? Not any more than some of the smarmy responses from lots of positive pete's dismissing people like me though. Just different sides. Just as people like me rile you up, people like TOfan and dissentowner rile others up. No right side here, despite you wanting to be the voice of reason constantly.

Johnny already knows he can get more money out there if he really wants to, and we do know that he indicated he wants to stay if the team wants to keep him. I can't answer why they have not signed at this point. I am just trying to look at it from a positive point of view and considering there seems to be no panic; That and Johnny appears happy, we know there have been times in the past where he didn't seem happy but right now that doesn't appear to be the case.

I think views that are thoughtful and made with critical thinking are given more respect than knee jerk and rather baseless negativity such as "things have always sucked so they will continue to suck" which seems to be what you are saying.
You have the right to say the things you do. And others have the right to challenge those views.

It goes both ways for sure.
I'm not all that positive, or negative about it. I'm just rolling with the season.
I don't like giving 29 year olds 8 year term at max dollars though, so if that was the only option on the table at the time given Gaudreau's last two seasons of production then it's not a GM failure to say no thanks.
Now he's bouncing back but he's still 29 and that comes with risk especially in a cap world that may not move much in the first half of the contract.
Without knowing what was turned down how can anyone possibly assess what the current GM is or should have been doing? Just seems silly to me.
And 30 years means nothing in my mind. Different eras, different financial systems, different people making the decisions.
Thanks for the personal shot, though it's actually more of a compliment if I'm honest. A voice of reason that doesn't fall into either ditch of extremes is pretty much where I plan to stay. Have fun on your rumble strips though!

If critical thinking and respecting opposing view points are your thing, I'd suggest you won't find much of that in professional sports fandom.
Emotions and fandom go hand in hand. Get rid of the passion, you may find this board isn't nearly as fun to read.

In my 20ish years on this board I have found plenty of it. And I don't view passion and thoughtfulness to be mutually exclusive at all.
