Huberdeau. That is all. He’s made him.

Without him - he’s Calgary Bennett.

Right... but Sam was given a LONG look on Huberdeau's line.
I'd also wager that Bennett has made Huberdeau's game look better as well, they really complement eachother.

It's a shame, but it is what it is.
Flames botched his development, no matter how you spin it.

I said it before but Sutter got here too late but he was the one who would have salvaged Bennett here. You could see it turning in the last few games before the trade. If you look at the biggest hole in the lineup it is a top 6 forward and preferably a center. Because Bennett plays with speed and an edge he would have been a perfect fit with Darryl.

The expansion draft and trade request made it pretty tough to do anything different. Had we lost Bennett to Seattle we likely do not get the Kylington breakout season with Gio blocking that spot

Huberdeau is to Bennett as McDavid is to Kassian/Chaisson/Hyman/any slug. The slug really doesn't impact the star player, but the star player can really make the slug look a lot better than he is.

Bennett is no slug. His coaches were the slugs.

All I see with Bennett is a slightly different approach to his game and a stronger focus on playing the center position. He's really become quite defensively responsible and is by far one of the most physical players for the Panthers. He's good at disrupting attacks and turning the puck up ice quickly for Huberdeau...or whoever he's playing with (he plays with a few different guys). Then, in the offensive zone he can be found doing the same thing, turning pucks over and getting it to the high skill guys. Then he finds the nice soft spots in the offensive zone for a quick one timer, or goes hard to the net to bang in a rebound. All of these things are essential for winning.

All in all, he's a really strong two-way center who contributes at both ends and brings some unique physicality. He's no "slug", and is quite an important player to the team.

I will say though, it may just be a matter of time before Anton Lundell takes over as the 2nd line center. He does pretty much the same thing as Bennett already, and he's a raw rookie. The kid is going to be a very good player for a long time.

These two posts in succession. One is an excellent dive into Bennett's play in Florida, the other is a post.

Sam Bennett is a nice player to have, far from irreplaceable, and trading him was still the right move for Calgary.

That, and he isn't sulking in Florida. Players that sulk tend to not produce as well.

Florida is such a deep team that not everyone is always scoring (except Huberdeau) but someone is always scoring. When someone slumps for a bit, they have so much depth that someone picks up the slack.

What's Huberdeau got in the last 2 games? 8 points I think?
Dude is white hot.

The right move? Dude demanded a trade. Being mishandled horribly by management is what got it to that point. Giving the flames kudos for that is ridiculous. I bet Heineman and the other pick generate less than 100 nhl games combined. It was a disaster.
