I don’t really understand the point of an AITA thread if these stories are fake but I guess we’re all here for the hypothetical ride?
Well in the original Reddit Aita thread 99% of threads are fake so it is on brand.

Hopefully you're not this guy, Cecil, but I wouldnt feel comfortable going on vacation with someone as calculating as this

But to answer this question, no, the sofa guy should NOT even consider asking to pay less than 1/3 of the accommodation
Went to a friend's house a few years back for a UFC night. Not really into it, but getting together with friends is always a good time. Bring 10 bucks for the PPV he says, no problem.

Halfway through, he's hungry and asks if he should order pizza. Sure. Pizza shows up, and like you said, he literally had it figured out to the penny. "That's gonna be $8.37 each fellas" or whatever it is. Here's a $10, don't worry about the change, christ.

He's always bitchy and whines about everything, probably why our circle of friends doesn't include him anymore.

I have a few buddies, we never worry about this stuff. You're buying beer for jam night tonight? Cool, I'll get the box next time. We don't count pennies because we are fair to each other, our friends. Long run, it works out so why sweat it.

I can't remember a single instance of being out with more than 1 other person where people didn't just pay their own bills. Restaurants seem to have zero problem splitting bill into what each person ordered. In fact, it appears to be the default most of the time. If someone wants to order an appy for the table, they usually ask to have it added to their bill (usually with the rest of the table arguing to chip in). Generally this results in that person getting a drink bought by someone else later on or whatever. When we're talking about differences of $10-$20, it doesn't matter. We're all friends and it tends to work out in the end. Even dates, if I'm able to convince a woman to let me pay for dinner (which is a whole new challenge, most women my age actually don't like that as they feel it creates an obligation - even if you don't think that way), it's almost always followed up by them buying drinks or covering whatever the next activity is. If their dinner costs me $50 and the follow up costs $30, who f***ing cares?

Maybe I just don't hang out with ***holes.

For the AirBnB issue, I’ve travelled as a third wheel with my brothers and their partners quite a bit. Usually we just split the cost of the rental evenly amongst the people there, regardless of sleeping arrangement. Because it’s not about being even, it’s about reducing the cost as much as possible for everyone.

Really, you don't try to save $3 by taking on a less comfortable bed?

There's always one or two of these in every circle.

These guys go through their entire lives thinking other people are the issue when they're just trying to be fair when the issue is, these are the calculating negative nancys people dont find fun to hang around with anymore

When they dont get new or mutual friends agreeing with their views, rather than self reflection, they'll take it up to the internet, post a "hypothetical it's-what-seinfeld-would-have-done situation" hoping for validation from the general masses.

Not to mention those friends are the first to stiff you when the roles are reversed...

The airbnb story reminds me of the one and only time we travelled and shared accommodations with our other couple friends. We decided to do a grocery run and grabbed any requests for folks. A few people in the group have some very specific dietary requests, so they grabbed those items on their own when they were out. Most of the time we were out on our own for meals, but we ended up grabbing pizza for the group one night. The last afternoon of the trip, the other couples ask us for the receipts so they could “pay their share” of the groceries and pizza. Ummm, absolutely not. I am not sitting down and going line by line on receipts that we didn’t even have anymore anyways to split things that we were more than happy to pay for. Two of the couples actually got a bit salty about it. Just catch us next time!

Yeah that's the crux of it. Because they are thinking about one person and one person only.

Hey this is obviously a really touchy issue for you and I apologize if I hit a nerve bringing it up. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to pm me. You’ve obviously been burned before and need a release for your anger and frustration.

Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll get over it eventually. I’d maybe suggest not dwelling on it and maybe avoid this thread if you think it’s a trigger.

I find whether people bring their own/split tabs/one buys this time, someone else buys next etc, it always works out unless there's someone in the group that over thinks to get things even/make sure they never pay more than they should.

He’s made only 7 posts on the subject. For a topic that spans over 5 pages, it isn’t that much. I think you’re the one whose nerve has been hit just the way I see it. You made a post about a ‘hypothetical’ situation and once people respond to your scenario with some passion (isn’t that the whole point of AITA??), you then claim that you hit a nerve on the people responding. I find that a bit ridiculous. Additionally I think a lot of your posts on this particular topic are extremely passive-aggressive (case in point, the post I’m quoting). Don’t ask for peoples opinions on whether you’re an ####### or not if you can’t take the heat. The majority of posters have decided the sofa man is the #######. Therefore, the sofa man is an #######. That’s how AITA threads work. Like goddamn if this scenario is hypothetical why do you care if people label the sofa man an #######

Further to this, I read Cecil's original as a very thinly veiled hypothetical, like "asking for a friend"... Sure you are. To me it seemed like he expected supportive responses to validate his behaviour and then didn't get it...

It turned into a passionate discussion because it's something everyone's dealt with at some point, and (IMO) boils down to the golden rule and is a very basic factor when deciding whether or not to maintain a friendship.

Not gonna lie, if I had a friend who tried to pull that nickel and diming stunt where they tried paying less than their share just because of the bed they are sleeping on, I wouldn't travel with them. Or at least, I would never share any costs with them and tell them to get their own room.

My wife has 1 friend like this.
She won't order fries with her burger in a restaurant to save money, but then reaches over and takes fries from your plate without asking.

Like that TV show, Extreme Cheapskates that used to be on and maybe still is. Most of those people featured were actually free loaders and not cheapskates.

Why would you even go to a restaurant with your family when you have no intention of ordering anything and just mooch off their plates? It's a little off topic to what's being discussed.

I'm not on CP as often as before, but to everyone else not named Cecil, is it really this easy to bait this guy?

The most impressive part is despite everyone quite literally saying he's the butt end of the joke, Cecil still couldnt resist but to double down

I just enjoyed the transparently fake “hey let me be nice and say you should just PM me so we can chat about it even though if I wanted that I could have just PM’d you instead of being this condescending (see, everyone else judging this argument? See how reasonable I’m being to this guy? See? I’m not the bad guy here I swear)” post.
