They did it in 2011 as well. Don't think that was political (or that it mattered.)

This year it absolutely did matter. There's no world where Kuznetsov and Chayka shouldn't be on Team Russia in a top-pairing or at least top-four role. And they were on the team last year!

Russia barely has any high-end defence prospects to begin with. They only had four top-50 NHL picks who were eligible for this tournament. They left three of those guys (Kuznetsov, Chayka, Grushnikov, all CHL players) off the roster entirely in favour of undrafted MHL players who have barely ever been on the NHL's radar, and it showed tonight.

Maybe you are right.

Someone should look up the CHL import draft vs WJC roster vs NHL draft rank and check for anomalies in years that have US/Russia spats.

They definitely have an inferior team than they should because of the weird non-North American 'rule' Zubov or whoever came up with this year. Flames prospect or no Flames prospect it's just lame.

Russia didn’t look that strong against canada. Albeit was their first game.

Their starting goalie gave up a lot of big rebounds and was badly out of position on a lot of cross ice passing plays.

Canada had the game well at hand until they switched goaltenders. Cossa was horrible.

As an example, on the Berard goal, the D-man pinched, and Coronato backed him up. Leaman used him on the PP and PK. I'm curious if he will play center, at this tournament. Its a 19 year old tournament, and the US has two 18 year olds, Cooley and James playing center.

He hasn't played much centre for Harvard and the USA squad is pretty deep at centre overall, but part of why he's so useful is his versatility.
