So whatever happened to real leadership? We have each side acting like six year olds. It’s ALL the other sides fault. Couldn’t have said we have some issues but we’re going to see if we can work them out? We have to get punched in the face with is BS right before Christmas? What a complete farce.
Even worse for when you have relatives coming from edm for six days of hell and get to listen to how inferior cowtown is. Not sure I can even argue that anymore. Ughh, there’s just not enough booze for this.

The real expense that CSEC agreed to and boasted about being on board with? The expense that predates Gondek? The expense she has repeatedly offered to seek funding for through the provincial and federal government?
Yeah, sure. I bet that’s it. You’ve cracked the case!
This issue has long exposed those who are "fiscal conservative, except for things I like"

The city didn’t renege on the deal. The flames did.
The city tried to renegotiate the terms of the deal. That happens all the time.
It was the flames who reneged by walking away from a signed deal.
For me, no post better sums up this thread than this one.
Everyone had their opinions before any facts came out. I guess you can butcher the english language and start talking renege vs. renegotiate to suit your own pov.
Sounds like both sides want a different deal than what was signed. Or at least they interpret it differently.

Yeah I always factor in "climate mitigation" when I build something. It's totally real.
City with the worst sports facilities in NA must be doing everything right I guess
It literally is rooftop solar PV. Pretty simple stuff. Not rocket surgery.
So how is City Planning/Admin feeling right now? Proud of themselves?
I wonder what the planners think when they impose 40 pages of prior to release conditions on developers only to see the projects die on the drawing board.

Bring Enmax in to pay for and install the solar panels. They keep the revenue generated from the electricity and work in some sort of branding to help provide them benefit in the up front capital.
It’s been explained multiple times, including the post below yours.
You can take a horse to water and all that. You’re going to have to figure this riddle out on your own.
Millions of buildings have been built without solar panels guy...maybe we should tear them all down and show how progressive we can be! Speaking of horses get off your high one.

Can we take a minute to explain something: there are unforeseen costs as part of building something. If you were building an infill and the existing infrastructure requires upgrade, the initiator of the build is responsible for the cost of the upgrade. This happened when I built my house. You pay for the demolition of the road, the digging of the hole, the upgraded connection, the repaving and the reconstruction of sidewalk. This stuff isn’t hidden, it’s just not known. You take the risk on when you build new things.
I feel like Bunk is providing some really important details that people are just glossing over.
This deal is not really falling apart over sidewalks and solar (by the way the solar will end up paying for itself in the end likely) it’s falling apart for other reasons and this is a trigger.
This is exactly what happens when you buy a property in pre-sale. You may have a deal in place and your builder comes back saying: I need another $50k. You can pay it, or walk away and lose your deposit and the unit goes back on the market.
All of this is really standard, and this can happen in any municipality, not just Calgary.

All were discussed and received no objection as the report went to CPC. Again, if CSEC didn’t want solar panels (or any other condition), why agree to the condition, crafted in a manner the applicant wanted (prior to occupancy)? If they wanted it removed after the fact, why didn’t they pursue that at multiple opportunities?
Do you think this might be scapegoating?

I’m sure the Flames owners see the price escalation coming due to the devaluation of the Canadian dollar an subsequent inflation thanks to the endless printing at the bank of canada.
As opposed to the tight purse strings of the US Fed? Weird thing to pinpoint lol

And millions will be built with them. This building wasn’t designed for the tastes and sensibilities of 1970. Modern building, modern aspects to the build. Did you know once upon a time buildings were built without windows? Down with windows, they’re a made up expense! Or… times change, more likely.
I’m also happy to inform you that you do not need to tear a building down to put solar panels on the roof.
I wouldn’t have carried on the horse thing though, in my saying you were effectively the horse, in yours I was riding the horse. I don’t want you to ride you around the thread, if that’s what you’re implying.

New buildings always have requirements that older ones didn’t. Ramps, non-horizontal slats on balcony railings, no asbestos, etc.

Certainly one option. When the city asked if they would consider the measure, they said they would want to do it in a way they could seek partnerships. They also needed consideration for how it would interact with rooftop sponsorship signage. That was why it was a prior to occupancy condition, not prior to approval or prior to release to buy time to figure that stuff out. It seemed a reasonable way to accommodate. As the flames started to worry about cost, the mayor offered to help seek other funding sources too.
I understand people are upset, looking for people to blame. But I think this is barking up the wrong tree.
